CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Northern State Wolves (6-24, 2-12 NSIC) broke a thirteen game losing streak today as they swept the Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles (0-17, 0-9 NSIC) in a double header 18-4 and 12-1 in Crookston, Minn. The Wolves were able to get some timely hitting and capitalized on ten Golden Eagles errors in the two games. The thirty runs that the Wolves scored is the most in a two game series this season.
Game 1
In game one the Wolves jumped out to an early 8-2 lead going into the top of the third inning. The two teams played the third and forth innings scoreless but the Wolves would break it open in the fifth, sixth, anf seventh as they would score a combined ten runs in those three innings to take the game 18-4. The Wolves were able to pound out 19 hits and did not commit a single error. The Wolves hit four home runs in the game, one by Kampsen, Downes, Keiser, and Paulson.
In the game the Wolves were led by Matt Tales as he went 4-for-6 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI. Adam Kampsen went 2-for-3 with 4 runs scored and 4 RBI's. He also had a triple and a home run in the game. The Golden Eagles were led by Chris Sculley as he went 2-for-3 with 2 runs socred and 1 RBI.
The Wolves got a nice pitching performance from Justin Downs as he went 4.0 innings giving up 4 hits, and 2 earned runs, while striking out 7. With the win Downes improves to 3-4 on the season. The losing pitcher for the Golden Eagles was Laudyn Nelson as he went 4.0 innings giving up 13 hits, 14 earned runs, and striking out 6.
Game 2
In the second game the Wolves did not let up as they got seven runs in the first inning and cruised to a 12-1 win. The Wolves had 10 hits in the game and one home run which was by Tom Keiser his second on the day.
Offensively the Wolves were led by Keiser as he went 1-for-3 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI's. Jamie Paul went 2-for-4 for the Wolves with a run scored and an RBI. The Golden Eagles could only muster 3 hits in the game one each by Josh Bullivant, Shawn Motl, and Kyle Finke.
Brock Pashen his first win for the Wolves as he went 3.0 innings only allowing one hit and striking out 8. With the win Pashen improves to 1-5 on the year. Getting the lose for the Golden Eagles was Beau Mertens as he went 4.0 innings giving up 7 hits, 5 earned runs, and striking out 2.
The Wolves will look to keep the streak going this weekend when they travel to Bemidji, Minn. to play four games with the Beavers on April 14 and 15. Game times for both days are 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm.
