Nearly
150 athletes and coaches from the Northern State University
football team will will work in conjunction with the United
Way on August 17 as they participate in a volunteer community
service project called the “Day of Champions” in Aberdeen
and surrounding communities.
The NSU
volunteers will assist the YMCA, Safe Harbor, New Beginnings,
Aberdeen Parks and Recreation, the City of Aberdeen, Tiger
Post Community Education Center and SPURS during the day-long
event.
The team
will take off the entire day of practice to take part in this
event. “I’m excited about the ‘Day of Champions’,” commented
NSU Head Football Coach Ken Heupel. “It’s a great opportunity
for our football program to get acquainted with the community
and for the community to see the football players. It’s a
great sharing day for everyone involved.”
Executive
Director of the United Way, Tom Agnitsh, also commented on
the event. “It helps to provide a great service to the community.
This also shows individuals that they have a place in the
community. I think everyone will benifit from it.”
Services
that players will be assisting with include cleaning, renovating
the castle at Storybook Land, beautification of Aberdeen,
landscaping and painting. Donations for this event were given
by the Sertoma Club of Aberdeen, Capt. Ralph Labbee of the
Salvation Army, Subway, Mayor Tom Hopper and Dave Osborne
along with the other organizations in the community.
