ABERDEEN,
SD - With a 57-6 vicotory over St. Mary (Kan.) on Saturday
afternoon, Northern State is off and running to its best start
since the 1989 season when the Wolves began 6-0.
In
Saturday's matchup, the Wolves had no trouble with the Spires
jumping out to a 35-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
NSU then scored a touchdown and a field goal to go into the
locker room up 44-0.
NSU's
ball control offense took over the second half as they only
managed a field goal, and in the fourth, another Wolves' three-spot
and a 37-yard touchdown run would close out the NSU scoring.
Redshirt
freshman Chang Beachem handled most of the second-half rushing
duties and netted a team-high 150 yards on the ground on 25
carries. Deacon Burns ran the ball 16 times for his second
straight 100-yard game with a total of 102 on the day.
Toby
Korrodi found 10-of-17 receivers on the day for 201 yards
and five touchdowns, just one away from a school record six.
Josh
Martin proved to be Korrodi's favorite target on the game
catching three balls for 104 yards and three touchdowns.
Senior
kicker Owen Olson made good on all three of his field goal
attempts on the day including a career-high 42 yarder in the
fourth quarter.
Defensively,
Kyle Bowman and Kia Tupou led the Wolves with five tackles
apiece including Tupou's two tackles for loss. Jason Carson
finished with two tackles in limited action but one was for
a 14-yard sack. Carson also made his first interception of
the year in the game.
As
a team, Northern out offensed the Spires 577-155. The Wolves
rushed for 376 yards on the day while holding USM to just
13.
Northern
State (2-0) will take on nationally-ranked St. Cloud State
next weekend in a 1 p.m. kickoff in St. Cloud.
