NORTHERN ROLLS OVER ST. MARY, 57-6

September 13 , 2003

ABERDEEN, SD - With a 57-6 vicotory over St. Mary (Kan.) on Saturday afternoon, Northern State is off and running to its best start since the 1989 season when the Wolves began 6-0.

In Saturday's matchup, the Wolves had no trouble with the Spires jumping out to a 35-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. NSU then scored a touchdown and a field goal to go into the locker room up 44-0.

NSU's ball control offense took over the second half as they only managed a field goal, and in the fourth, another Wolves' three-spot and a 37-yard touchdown run would close out the NSU scoring.

Redshirt freshman Chang Beachem handled most of the second-half rushing duties and netted a team-high 150 yards on the ground on 25 carries. Deacon Burns ran the ball 16 times for his second straight 100-yard game with a total of 102 on the day.

Toby Korrodi found 10-of-17 receivers on the day for 201 yards and five touchdowns, just one away from a school record six.

Josh Martin proved to be Korrodi's favorite target on the game catching three balls for 104 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior kicker Owen Olson made good on all three of his field goal attempts on the day including a career-high 42 yarder in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, Kyle Bowman and Kia Tupou led the Wolves with five tackles apiece including Tupou's two tackles for loss. Jason Carson finished with two tackles in limited action but one was for a 14-yard sack. Carson also made his first interception of the year in the game.

As a team, Northern out offensed the Spires 577-155. The Wolves rushed for 376 yards on the day while holding USM to just 13.

Northern State (2-0) will take on nationally-ranked St. Cloud State next weekend in a 1 p.m. kickoff in St. Cloud.
