Wolves Battle Adversity to Down the Lopers

Aberdeen, S.D. - Northern State pulled together on Saturday afternoon after adversity struck to down Nebraska Kearney 20-10 in front of 3,200 fans at Clark Swisher Field in Aberdeen, S.D.

Just prior to kickoff Wolves starting quarterback Toby Korrodi was called away due to a family emergency, leaving freshman Andrew Corre to step up; and that is what the 6’2, 220 pound Denver, Colo. native did.

Corre completed 13 of 26 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown. His long of the day stretched 52 yards, connecting with senior Matt Pinto for the Wolves first score. On 26 attempts on the day Corre was not sacked once, which says a lot for the offensive line of the Wolves.

The o-line cleared gapping holes for running backs Rudy Jones and Tavis Ve’e. Jones finished the day with 117 yards rushing on 31 carries and a touchdown. Ve’e netted 40 yards on 12 rushes.

The Wolves opened their scoring with a 52 pass from Corre to Pinto. The drive went 66 yards on four plays with 8:45 left in the first. Clinton Arial-Ryan added a 20 yard field goal with 6:29 remaining in the first half and a 42 yarder with just three seconds remaining in the first half to send the Wolves in leading 13-3.

Jones scored the Wolves final touchdown with 1:31 left in the third quarter to put the Wolves up 20-3. Kearney scored a late touchdown on a Eric Perry pass to Garth Mins to end the scoring at 20-10.

The Wolves defense gave up 361 yards of total offense in the game but got the job done holding the Lopers to just ten points.

T.J. Johnson and Misi Finau both picked off their second pass in as many games, while Shawn Warren added one as well. Warren and Finau led the Wolves with seven tackles a piece to go with their INTs. Veaila Tupou had the lone sack of the day for either team.

The Wolves are home again next week when they host North Central rival St. Cloud State at 7:00 p.m. at Clark Swisher Field.

Warren's interception came with 1:38 left in the game as the Lopers were driving. He picked off an Eric Perry pass in the endzone and returned it twenty yards to seal the win for the Wolves. Warren is the first Wolf to earn NSIC Player of the Week honors this season.
