Turnovers - Penalties Hurt Wolves
Aberdeen, S.D. - St. Cloud State scored early and often to down the Wolves 42-7 at Swisher Field. Turnovers and penalties hurt the Wolves as they were charged with 11 penalties for 113 yards and turned the ball over twice, once on their own 33, and once on the Huskies two yard line.
Andrew Corre (taking over for quarterback Toby Korrodi for the second game) was intercepted on his third pass of the game. The Huskies took only four plays to go 33 yards and take a 7-0 lead under two minutes into the game. SCSU went on to score the next 35 points of the game, with three touchdowns coming from running back Matt Birkel (16, 24, 5 yarders).
Northern State finally got on the board with a four-yard touchdown receptions by Josh Martin with 6:43 remaining in the game. Martin finished the game with ten receptions for 132 yards.
After finding themselves down early the Wolves needed to pass to get back into the ball game. Of the Wolves 96 total plays, 69 were passes. Quarterback Corre completed 32 of those 69 passes for 325 yards. He also set the NSU single game record for pass attempts in a game, and tied the record for most completions in a game. The 69 passes also set an NSU record for attempts in a game.
The Wolves seven points was their lowest point total since September 7 th, 2002 when they fell to Augustana in their season opener 14-6, which ends stretch of 23 games in which the Wolves scored in double figures. It also marks the worse loss for the Wolves since a 70-35 loss to Winona State on November 3 rd, 2001.
SCSU had a balanced offensive attack as they gained 200 rushing yards and 212 yards in the air to finish with 412 total yards. The Wolves had 325 yards through the air, but rushed 27 times for only 11 net yards (336 total yards).
Waleed Gaines was tied for a game high eight tackles; he also had one of the Wolves two interceptions. Shawn Warren picked off his third pass in as many games. Steve Espinoza also had eight tackles on the night, including one for a loss.
The Wolves are home again next weekend when they host MSU Moorhead (0-4) for Gypsy Day’s.
