Former Northern State Running Back Ronnie Cruz Signed By NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs

Ronnie Cruz was signed a two year deal. Cruz, a 6’0, 237 pounder from Kelseyville, CA was signed after being invited to try out with the Chief’s draft picks and other players last week. He will have his first practice with the entire team when the Chiefs hold a mini-camp on June 4-6.

Cruz and Northern State Head Coach Ken Heupel will be available on Wednesday, May 5th at 12:00 p.m. in the Hall of Fame room in the Barnett Center on the NSU campus for interviews. Contact NSU Athletic Media Relation Director Nick Kornder for more details.

Ronnie CruzCruz, a transferred to Northern State from Mendocino Community College, played 22 games over two seasons at Northern State. He accumulated 2,368 yards on 440 carries (5.4 avg.) with 25 TDs, as well as 39 catches for 375 yards (9.6) and two scores at NSU.

During the 2003 season, Cruz rushed for 1,476 yards and totaled 19 touchdowns. He guided Northern State to the tenth best rushing attack in NCAA II and was a three-time Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Offensive Player of the Week. Cruz was also honored as a Football Gazette National Player of the Week on Oct. 14 after his 260-yard rushing performance against Minnesota, Crookston. Cruz ranked eighth in the nation in scoring and tenth in rushing yards and was a second team pick for both the Dakotonics, Inc. All-Region team and the Don Hansen Football Gazette.

At Clear Lake High School, Cruz was named football MVP and student-athlete of the year during his prep career.

Northern State University is a NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference located in Aberdeen, SD.
