Wolves Blast Past Mayville State 60-13 in Season Opener

Aberdeen, SD - The Chris Boden Era could not have started better than it did as Johnny Bentley scored on a seven-yard touchdown on the Wolves first offense play of the season as the Wolves cruised to a 60-13 win over Mayville State. In front of over 3,800 fans at the new Clark Swisher Field, Bentley had a career game as he scored five touchdowns, rushed for 173 yards and hauled in two passes for 89 yards after playing only in the first half.

The Wolves dominated from the start after a bad snap on a punt set them up on the Comets seven-yard line. On the next play Bentley broke through a pair of tackles to score his first of four rushing touchdowns of the first half.

The Wolves scored touchdowns on their first six possessions as they cruised out to a 42-0 lead. Bentley then put himself in the NSU record book as he motored 83 yards with 3:01 left in the first to put the Wolves up 48-0 at the half. The 83 yard scamper set the NSU record for the longest run for a touchdown, as he broke Tyrone Morgan’s record of 81 yards against Southwest State back in 2000. For the day Bentley rushed nine times for 173 and four touchdowns for an average of 19.2 yards per carry. He also caught two passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Wolves quarterback Drew Corre was nearly perfect in Boden’s new offense as he went 9 for 10 for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Mike Dill took advantage of his only carry as he blasted his way 42 yards for a touchdown with 7:22 left in the game.

With 60 points the Wolves came with five points of breaking the school records for points in a game. The old record was set back in 1969 when the Wolves racked up 64 points on Black Hills State.

The Wolves summed 540 total yards, 351 on the ground and 189 through the air. The Wolves defense was stellar against the rush as they held the Comets to –5 yards rushing on 31 attempts. For the game the Comets amassed only 130 total offense.

Leading the Wolves defense was Jackson Hegerfeld and Stephon Betts, who both had nine tackles. Hegerfeld was two tackles for seven yards lost and a pass breakup. The Wolves had 10 tackles for loss, four sacks and three interceptions in the game.

The Wolves take on Augustana College next Saturday, September 3 rd at 7:00 p.m. at the new Clark Swisher Field.
