Northern State’s Game Tying Extra Point Blocked in Final Two Minutes
Aberdeen, S.D. – Northern State’s extra point to tie the game at 17 was blocked by with 1:43 left in the fourth quarter as the Wolves fall to in-state rival Augustana 17-16 in front of 4,089 fans at the new Swisher Field. The Wolves fall to 1-1 on the season while the Vikings improve to 1-1.
The Wolves drove 67 yards on six plays capped off by a 15 yard Andrew Corre to Greg Agho touchdown pass to bring the Wolves within one with less than two minutes to go. On the extra point Augustana’s Nick Bentele bulged through to get a paw on the ball, knocking short and giving the Vikings the narrowest of victories.
Augustana got on the board first on a five yard touchdown from Tommy Flyger to Dan Klumper with 11:27 left in the first quarter. The Vikings took their opening possession 48 yards on ten plays to take an early 7-0.
The Wolves answered early in the second quarter on a 30 yard Clinton Arial-Ryan field goal to make it 7-3. Augie responded on their next possession as they booted a 32 yard field goal to go back up by a touchdown at 10-3. That was all the scoring in the first half.
The Wolves struck first in the second half as they marched 78 yards on eight plays, scoring on a 16 yard Corre to Johnny Bentley TD pass tying the game at 10-10.
Augie again answered as they took their ensueing possession 81 yards on 11 plays capped off by a 14 yard touchdown pass to Ryan Rank to put themselves back up seven at 17-10.
The Wolves defense kept them in the game as they had two big third down conversion stops late in the game to keep them alive. The Wolves got the ball back with four minutes to go on their own 33. Over the next 2:34 the Wolves drove 67 yards to paydirt and what looked like tying up the game. But nothing is a given in college football as the extra point conversion failed and the Wolves comeback hopes dwindled.
The Wolves were out gained by the Vikings 378 to 241. The Wolves rushed for 104 yards and threw for 152. Johnny Bentley broke the century mark running for the second straight week as he rushed 23 times for 102 yards. He also caught four passes for 28 yards and a touchdown. Drew Corre passed 31 times, connecting on 15 for 152 yards and two touchdowns. For the game the Wolves had seven different players catch a ball in the game.
Augustana spread the ball around as well as he Flyger hooked up with nine different receivers in the game. Flygler was 17 of 34 for 184 and a pair of touchdowns. He also rushed 14 times for 71 yards.
The Wolves defense was led by Keri Niumata and Austin Quinn, who both had nine tackles in the game. Niumata had two tackles for loss. Una Lata made his presents known in is depute at outside linebacker for the Wolves as he had five tackles and a forced fumble. The forced fumble came on a drive where Augie was threatening, and Lata ran down Flyger and knocked the ball loose, where big Mike Liedberg was waiting to pounce on it. Liedberg also had five stops on the day from his defensive line position.
The Wolves hit the road for the first time this season as they head to Nebraska-Kearney next Saturday, September 10 for a 3:00 p.m. start with the Lopers.
