Five turnovers on the road does not win football games, as NSU found out Saturday night in a 26-21 loss at Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
For the Pointers, it was another sweet season-opening Spud Bowl victory (they are 12-0 in Spud Bowl competition). For the Wolves, it was another game to wonder what if. Last week the Wolves played Augustana tough, but the game turned on a pair of costly fumbles deep in NSU territory. This week, the Wolves outgained their opponent offensively (stats) and led much of the game, but turnovers again proved to be the difference.
Going into the half, it seemed the Wolves had already weathered the turnover storm. NSU coughed the up the ball on its first two possessions, which led to one Pointer touchdown. But a 56-yard touchdown scamper by sophomore running back Tyrone Morgan and two touchdown passes hauled in by senior wideout Mark Chamernick from junior quarterback Tom Ramerth put NSU up 21-13 going into the break.
The Pointers scored a touchdown late in the third quarter to close the
gap to 21-19. On NSU's ensuing drive, Stevens Point turned in what would
be the winning play. The Pointers' Aaron Evans picked off a Ramerth pass
and returned it 38 yards for what would be the final score of the game.
