Northern State had to ride a rocky road in its drive for five straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships, but when the 1999 conference title thrill ride ended and the dust settled, the Wolves were once again the team left standing.
The conference championship and battle for which team would move on to the post-season all came down to the last game of the regular season. Winona State came to the Barnett Center ranked first in the conference at 10-1, while Northern stood at 9-2. The defending North Central Region champion Wolves needed a win not only to secure a share of their fifth straight NSIC title, but also for the right to move on to the regional tournament. NSU held the tiebreaker advantage over Winona due to a better record during the non-conference season.
Thanks in part to sizzling shooting and 6,000 frenzied fans, the Wolves scored an emphatic 99-79 win. NSU set a school record for 3-point percentage in a game, going an unheard of 18-of-22 from beyond the arc (82 percent). In addition to succeeding in their drive for five, the Wolves also didn't break their string of national tournament runs. NSU has made a national tournament appearance in each of its four years under NCAA II since joining the affiliation for the 1995-96 season. With the win that avenged an earlier conference loss to Winona during the season, NSU earned the chance to defend their North Central Region crown and Elite Eight berth from the 1997-98 season, thanks to the coming together of a talented young team with key upperclassmen leadership.
Nebraska-Kearney edged NSU 85-80 in the first round of the regional, ending Northern's season at 21-7.
Starting senior forwards Mark Rich (Aberdeen) and Kyle Johnson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) along with junior guards Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) and Dan Fischer (Bagley, Minn.) provided the backbone for this year's squad, while sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) provided much of the offensive punch. Miller was ranked nationally in scoring for most of the year, ending the season averaging 20.3 points per game. In the paint, three young forces emerged in sophomore center Ben Dahl (Cottonwood, Minn.) and freshmen Brad Hansen (Tea) and Andy Foster (Caledonia, Minn.).
Head coach Bob Olson recorded his 300th career victory during the season.
In Olson's 14 years on the sidelines, his teams have appeared in nine national
tournaments (five in the NAIA, four in NCAA Division II), played in two
national championship games, won six Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
titles and have had one NCAA II Elite Eight Appearance since joining the
NCAA II ranks in 1995. Olson was named North Central Region Coach of the
Year last season for taking the Wolves to the Elite Eight in just the program's
third year under NCAA II. Olson is also a five-time Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference Coach of the Year. He was named the 1993-94 NAIA II Coach of
the Year and has garnered truckloads of coach of the year honors from NAIA
subdivisions, local media and alumni groups.

The Lopers exacted some revenge this season, earning a barn-burner 117-110 victory at Northern. Sophomore Jared Miller (Mitchell) led Northern with 26 points, while senior forward Mark Rich (Aberdeen) led the boards crew with seven. The complete 1999 North Central Regional Schedule is below:

Semifinal Friday
#2 Metro State (Colo.) vs. USD/Mesa winner, 6 p.m.
#1 Wayne State vs. UNK/NSU winner, 8 p.m.

Championship Game, 7 p.m.
Last week Needing a win in the regular season finale against conference top-dog Winona State to grab a share of its fifth straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship and move on to the post-season via tiebreaker, Northern scored an emphatic 99-79 win over WSU in NSU's Barnett Center Feb. 24. NSU set a school record for 3-point percentage in a game, going an unheard of 18-of-22 from beyond the arc (82 percent). With the win, Northern kept alive not only its string of conference championships, but also an impressive national run. In their four years under the NCAA II affiliation, the Wolves have never missed a national tournament.
Miller named NSIC Player of the Week Sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell) garnered his third Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week honor of the season for his performance last week. Miller poured in 29 points, dished out nine assists and grabbed six rebounds in NSU's win against Winona State. Miller was 8-of-10 from 3-point range and 9-of-11 overall. In all, NSU has earned six conference players of the week this season (Miller three, Dan Fischer two and Scott Hanson one).
300 and counting Head coach Bob Olson (14th season) reached the 300-win watermark for his career against Moorhead State Feb. 3. His career coaching record, all at Northern State University, now stands at 305-128. He leads his program to its ninth national tournament appearance this weekend (five in the NAIA, fourth in NCAA Division II). Under Olson, the Wolves have played in two NAIA national championship games and won six Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference titles.
Olson was named North Central Region Coach of the Year last season for taking the Wolves to the Elite Eight in just the program's third year under NCAA II. Olson is also a five-time Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year. He was named the 1993-94 NAIA II Coach of the Year and has garnered truckloads of coach of the year honors from NAIA subdivisions, local media and alumni groups.
Olson has coached 24 all-conference players, five NAIA All-Americans, one NCAA II First-Team All-American and eight Academic All-Americans. His career win mark at NSU ranks second only to legendary NSU coach Bob Wachs, who recorded 529 career wins from 1955 to 1985. Olson played under Wachs in the mid 1970's before succeeding him as NSU's 15th basketball coach for the 1985-86 season.
Olson is assisted by Paul Sather (first year), and Brad Christenson (seventh year). Graduate assistants are Jeff Trumbauer and Tom Webb. Student coach is Justin Forde.
Fischer questionable NSU had to do without starting off-guard and second-leading scorer Dan Fischer for most of February due to injury. The junior from Bagley, Minn., tore his plantar fascia (a band of fibrous tissue that helps support the arch in the foot) at Bemidji State Feb. 6 and is questionable to return for the regionals. The pure shooting Fischer, ranked nationally at times this season in 3-pointers made and 3-point field goal percentage, was the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 15.3 points per game. Sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell) has taken his place in the starting lineup.
Loper notes NSU leads the all-time series with Kearney 7-6. UNK is led by 6-9 senior post and All-American candidate Eric Strand. Strand nets 20 points per contest and also leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per game. But by no means is he the team's only threat. In all, five Lopers average in double-digits per game. After Strand is 6-5 junior forward Nate Mohs with 14.5 ppg on 59 percent shooting (ranked 11th in the nation in FG%) to go with 6.3 rpg and 2 spg. Next is 5-11 freshman guard Anthony Harms (12. 5 ppg, 2.8 apg), 6-2 senior guard Brent Karnatz (12.1 ppg, 3 rpg), 6-4 senior forward Marcus Harris (12.0 ppg, 4.6 rpg). As a team, the Lopers average 88.8 points per contest (ranked fifth in the nation in scoring offense) on 49 percent shooting while holding opponents to 79.5 on 46 percent shooting. UNK is ranked 11th in the nation in team free-throw percentage at 74.2 percent. The Lopers are ranked 13th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (40.3 percent).
Conference wrap-up According to the final conference statistics report, Northern State ranked first in the conference in scoring offense (81.8 points per game), scoring margin (defeating NSIC opponents by 10.3 ppg), field goal percentage defense (holding opponents to 43 percent from the field), 3-point field goal percentage defense (holding opponents to 33 percent from behind arc), rebounding (37.6 rpg) and 3-point field goals made (9.2 per game). Individually, sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell) won the scoring title with 21.3 points per game. He also finished first in 3-pointers made (3.92 per game) and steals (2.33 spg). Senior steady-man forward Mark Rich (Aberdeen) finished ranked fifth in assists (3.83 apg), while defensive yeoman senior forward Kyle Johnson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) ended fourth in rebounding (6.2 rpg). Junior point guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) is all over the conference lists, ranking seventh in scoring (15.2 ppg), fourth in free-throw percentage (81.4 percent), third in field goal percentage (.570) and tied for 9th in 3-pointers made per game (1.67).
Nationally speaking Sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell) is ranked 42nd in the nation in scoring with 19.9 points per game, according to the latest NCAA Statistics Report released last week. As a team, the Wolves are ranked 16th in the nation in rebounding margin, out-boarding opponents by an average of 6.7 caroms per game. NSU is also ranked 18h nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (39.7 percent). The newest national rankings come out Tuesday afternoon. Check out www.ncaa.org for the latest national statistical rankings.

WOLVES/WARRIORS II: THE RECKONING
Feb. 21, 1999
Conference crown, postseason berth at stake Northern State University hosts Winona State University Wednesday, Feb. 24 in the regular season finale for both teams. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Barnett Center. The Warriors (15-11, 10-1 NSIC) would win the conference outright and move onto the postseason with a win, while the Wolves (20-6, 9-2 NSIC) would gain a share of the conference title and head to postseason play via tiebreaker with a win.
The tiebreaker If Northern wins, both teams finish at 10-2 in conference play. The first criterion for the tiebreaker is head-to-head competition, which would be split. The second criterion is how each team fared in head-to-head competition against the next-best NSIC teams in the standings. Since each team's other conference loss was at Southwest State, that tiebreaker would also prove inconclusive. The last criterion to consider is the NCAA Power Formula, which Northern would win based on its vastly better record in the non-conference season.
300 and counting Head coach Bob Olson (14th season) reached the 300-win watermark for his career against Moorhead State Feb. 3. His career coaching record, all at Northern State University, now stands at 304-128. Olson's teams have appeared in eight national tournaments (five in the NAIA, three in NCAA Division II), played in two national championship games, won five Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference titles (including four consecutive titles entering this season) and have had one NCAA II Elite Eight Appearance since joining the NCAA II in 1995.
Fischer out NSU will have to do without starting off-guard and second-leading scorer Dan Fischer for the remainder of the regular season. The junior from Bagley, Minn., tore his plantar fascia (a band of fibrous tissue that helps support the arch in the foot) at Bemidji State Feb. 6 and is unlikely to return this season. The pure shooting Fischer, ranked nationally at times this season in 3-pointers made and 3-point field goal percentage, was the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 15.3 points per game. Sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) takes his place in the starting lineup.
Warrior Notes Winona defeated NSU 82-75 in the teams' first meeting this season Jan. 30 despite a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds from NSU junior point guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.). The Warriors are led by the forward tandem of 6-6 junior Justin Treptow and 6-6 sophomore Kyle Schlaak, who each average over 15 points per game. Treptow leads the team in rebounding with 6.2 rpg, while Schlaak leads the way in field goal percentage, stroking 57 percent from the field. Rounding out the double-digit performers is 6-3 junior guard and perimeter threat Lance Meincke with 13.9 ppg, who knocks down about three treys per game. First-year coach Mike Leaf guides the Warriors. Leaf spent 11 years as an assistant before taking the head job.
Series The Wolves lead the all-time series with Winona 30-14. In the 1990's (including the 1989-90 season), NSU leads the series 12-7. The Warriors have won the teams' last two meetings, but before that suffered through a dry spell against the Wolves. The last time WSU defeated NSU before last season was a big upset in Aberdeen during the 1992-93 season despite 36 points from NSU all-time leading scorer Eric Kline. It was NSU's only regular-season loss during a 34-2 campaign that ended with NSU finishing second at the NAIA II National Tournament. In all, Winona has come away from Aberdeen with three wins since the Barnett Center became the home of the Wolves for the beginning of the 1987-88 season.
A year ago Winona State was the only team to hand Northern a conference loss last season. The Warriors defeated touring NSU 80-74 in the last game of the regular season. The loss snapped a 10-game NSU winning streak. Before that, NSU handled the Warriors 75-55 at home. In the home victory, then-senior Ross Pankratz NSU with 17 points. Then-senior Ryan Miller led the boards crew with 11.
Last week NSU split, losing at Southwest State 90-73 before winning at Minnesota-Morris 70-57. After taking away the Wolves' control of their own destiny, Southwest State put NSU back on track for its fifth consecutive NSIC title by upsetting Winona 76-54 in Marshall Saturday.
Conference leaders As a team, Northern State is ranked first in the conference in scoring offense (80.2 points per game), field goal percentage defense (holding opponents to 43 percent from the field), 3-point field goal percentage defense (holding opponents to 33 percent from behind arc), rebounding (38.2 rpg) and 3-point field goals made (8.36 per game). NSU is second to Winona State in scoring margin (defeating NSIC opponents by an average of 9.5 points per game) and rebounding margin (+5.1 rpg). Individually, sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) is first in the conference in scoring (20.5 ppg), 3-pointers made (3.55 per game) and steals (2.55 spg). Senior steady-man forward Mark Rich (Aberdeen, S.D.) is ranked fifth in assists (3.64 apg), while defensive yeoman senior forward Kyle Johnson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) is tied for third in rebounding (6 rpg). Junior point guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) is all over the conference lists, ranking seventh in scoring (14.5 ppg), third in free-throw percentage (80.7 percent), tied for 10th in rebounding (5.4 rpg), tied for 10th in assists (2.82 apg) and tied for 10th in 3-pointers made per game (1.36).
Nationally speaking Sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) is ranked 39th in the nation in scoring with 20 points per game, according to the latest NCAA Statistics Report released last week. As a team, the Wolves are ranked 14th in the nation in rebounding margin, out-boarding opponents by an average of 7.6 caroms per game. NSU is also ranked 11th nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (40.6 percent) and 18th in 3-pointers made per game with 8.4.
Broadcast Rob Waltman handles play-by-play duties on 93 KSDN radio (94.1 FM). Pre-game starts 20 minutes before tip-off of first Wolves game.

WOLVES GEAR UP FOR KEY TWO-GAME ROAD SWING
Feb. 16, 1999
Schedule Northern State University travels to Southwest State University (Marshall, Minn.) Wednesday, Feb. 17; travels to Minnesota-Morris Saturday, Feb. 20. Tip-off for both games is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Records Northern State is 19-5 overall and 8-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Southwest State is 13-11 overall and 4-5 in the NSIC. Minnesota-Morris is 2-22 overall and 0-9 in conference play entering Wednesday's game at Winona State.
First things first Before any talk of a showdown with first-place Winona State (14-10, 9-0 NSIC entering Wednesday's game against Morris and Saturday's game at Southwest) next week, the Wolves have to take care of business this week for that game to mean anything. If the Wolves lose even once and Winona wins out, next Wednesday's regular season finale against the Warriors is for nothing but pride.
300 and counting Head coach Bob Olson (14th season) reached the 300-win watermark for his career against Moorhead State two weeks ago. His career coaching record, all at Northern State University, now stands at 303-127.
His career win mark at NSU ranks second only to legendary NSU coach Coach Bob Wachs, who recorded 529 career wins from 1955 to 1985.
Hanson named NSIC Player of the Week Junior point guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) earned NSIC Player of the Week honors for his efforts last week. Hanson averaged 16 points on 52.6 percent shooting, six rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in two wins last week. Against No. 3 Wayne State, the All-American candidate had a career game, leading NSU to the win with a career-high 24 points and game-high eight rebounds.
Mustang Minutes Southwest State is led by the brothers Koenen. Sophomore 6-7 forward Scott Koenen leads the team in scoring (13.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 rpg), while the gargantuan 6-10 frame of up-and-coming freshman sensation Chad Koenen intimidates the paint with nearly 10 ppg to go with 4.1 rpg. Senior Mike Koenen averages 9.4 points and five rebounds per game. He and Chad lead the team in shooting percentage, both hitting at over a 55 percent clip from the field. Senior 5-10 guard Sean Smith is second in team scoring with 10.3 ppg. As a team, the Mustangs take good care of the rock, leading the conference in assist/turnover ratio at a whopping +6 margin. The Mustangs also lead the league in offensive rebounding (14.11 team offensive boards per game).
SSU is coached by former NSU assistant Tim Miles, who helped the Wolves make five national tournament appearances from 1989-1995.
Cougar Tracks Minnesota-Morris is led in conference play by 6-2 junior point guard Marquise Watts, who earned NSIC Player of the Week honors the first week in February. Watts is second in the conference in assists (5.8 apg), third in steals (1.8 spg) and amazingly fourth in rebounding (6.1 rpg) from his point guard position. Sophomore 6-5 forward Eric Beckmann ranks eighth in conference scoring at 14.8 ppg. Morris is guided by fourth-year coach Jim Severson.
A little history NSU has won the past 14 meetings against SSU and leads the all-time series 40-10.In the teams' first meeting this season, NSU defeated SSU 74-62 in Aberdeen behind 20 points from junior point guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) and 10 rebounds from senior forward Kyle Johnson (Coon Rapids, Minn.). Overall, the story was on the glass, where NSU outrebounded SSU 42-29. Last year, the Wolves swept SSU, including a 93-90 overtime thriller victory at Southwest. Then-senior Ross Pankratz led the way with 17 points, while now-senior Mark Rich (Aberdeen, S.D.) led the boards crew with 11 rebounds. The Wolves scored a 92-70 victory later in the season inside the Barnett Center. Rich led the team in rebounding in that game as well.
NSU has won the past five meetings against Morris and leads the all-time series 35-25. The last Cougars' win was during the 1995-96 season, when UMM upended NSU 100-92 in Morris despite 31 points from Lance Luitjens. Earlier this season, NSU defeated Morris 101-78 in the Barnett Center. Sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) led the team in scoring with 23 points, while junior guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) pulled down nine rebounds. Last season, NSU swept the Cougars, including a 91-81 win in Morris. Now-injured junior guard Dan Fischer (Bagley, Minn.) led the way with 24 points, while now-senior forward Mark Rich hauled down 11 boards.

3rd-RANKED WAYNE STATE TO INVADE WACHS ARENA
Feb. 9, 1999
Schedule Northern State University hosts Wayne State (Neb.) Wednesday, Feb. 10; hosts Minnesota-Duluth Saturday, Feb. 13.
300 and counting Head coach Bob Olson (14th season) reached
the 300-win watermark for his career against Moorhead State last week.
His career coaching record, all at Northern State University, now stands
at 301-127. Olson's teams have appeared in eight national tournaments (five
in the NAIA, three in NCAA Division II), played in two national championship
games, won five Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference titles (including
four consecutive titles entering this season) and have had one NCAA II
Elite Eight Appearance since joining the NCAA II in 1995.
Olson was named North Central Region Coach of the Year last season
for taking the Wolves to the Elite Eight in just the program's third year
under NCAA II. Olson is also a five-time Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
Coach of the Year. He was named the 1993-94 NAIA II Coach of the Year and
has garnered truckloads of coach of the year honors from NAIA subdivisions,
local media and alumni groups.
Olson has coached 24 all-conference players, five NAIA All-Americans, one NCAA II First-Team All-American and eight Academic All-Americans. His career win mark at NSU ranks second only to legendary NSU coach Coach Bob Wachs, who recorded 529 career wins from 1955 to 1985.
Records Northern State is 17-5 overall and 7-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Wayne State is 20-2 overall and 6-0 against NSIC competition this season. The Wildcats, although admitted to the NSIC last year, will not be eligible for the basketball championship until next season. Minnesota-Duluth is 11-12 overall and 4-4 in the conference heading into Wednesday's game at Winona State.
Fischer out NSU will have to do without starting off-guard and second-leading scorer Dan Fischer for the remainder of the season. The junior from Bagley, Minn., tore his plantar fascia (a band of fibrous tissue that helps support the arch in the foot) at Bemidji State Feb. 6 and is not expected to return this season. The pure shooting Fischer, ranked nationally at times this season in 3-pointers made and 3-point field goal percentage, was the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 15.3 points per game. Sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) will take his place in the starting lineup.
The "Big Cat" is back After missing the Moorhead State game with a sprained ankle, freshman post Andy Foster (Caledonia, Minn.) returned for light duty against Bemidji State last week and is expected to work his way back into the normal rotation this week.
Year of the Wildcat? Wayne State's time has arrived. The Wildcats are accomplishing their goal of making sure there is little doubt who deserves one of the North Central Region's two at-large berths to the NCAA II tournament this season. Since Wayne is not eligible for a conference championship, its only way into the post-season is by an at-large berth, which has narrowly eluded the team in years past. WSC has ruled the roost in the region rankings since December and has been climbing the national polls all season. Wayne has been ranked third in the country for the past two weeks. The Wildcats have ripped off 17 straight victories, including a 78-70 victory over Northern in raucous Rice Auditorium Jan. 20.
The series between the teams is tied at 12-12. In Wednesday's rubber match, NSU will try to defend homecourt and split the season series for the fifth consecutive year. The teams have successfully defended homecourt since NSU swept Wayne during the 1993-94 season. The Wildcats have never beaten NSU inside the Barnett Center.
The Wildcats are led by 6-2 senior floor general and All-America candidate Tyler Johnson, who averages 14.6 points per game on 52 percent shooting and 5.9 assists per game. Also scoring 14.6 points per contest is 6-3 sophomore guard Brad Joens. Leading the team on the boards is 6-7 junior forward/center Eric Henderson with six rebounds per game.
Bulldog Bites The Bulldogs are riding a three-game winning streak heading into Wednesday's game at Winona State. The first time NSU played UMD this season, the Wolves broke a three-game Bulldog run with a 72-63 win in Duluth. Sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) scored 26 points to lead NSU offensively while senior forward Kyle Johnson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) hauled down 11 rebounds to lead the Wolves. Last year, the Wolves swept UMD, first 80-70 in Aberdeen before a 93-85 win on the road. In the home game, then-senior Ryan Miller led NSU with 23 points and eight rebounds.
UMD leads the all-time series between the teams 27-15. NSU is riding a three-game win streak against the Bulldogs, with UMD's last win coming on Feb. 15, 1997 by an 84-82 margin in Aberdeen.
The Bulldogs are led by 6-7 junior center sensation Josh Quigley, who averages 19.7 points per game on 50 percent shooting from the field. Quigley also leads the team in rebounding with 6.1 boards per game. UMD has three more players averaging double digits in points in 6-7 freshman forward Chris Stanley (11.7 ppg), 6-2 junior guard Mark Thomson (10.9 ppg) and 6-2 senior guard Kevin Braiedy (10.3 ppg).
Last week NSU scored two wins, first at home over Moorhead State 76-62, then on the road at Bemidji State 105-89. Junior guard Dan Fischer (Bagley, Minn.) led the way against the Dragons with 19 points, while junior point guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) led the boards crew with 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) exploded for a career-high 38 points, including eight treys, to lead the Wolves at Bemidji.
Conference leaders As a team, Northern State is ranked first in the conference in scoring offense (83 points per game), scoring margin (defeating NSIC opponents by an average of 12 points per game) and field goal percentage defense (holding opponents to 43.1 percent from the field). The Wolves are also first as a team in rebounding margin, out-boarding the opposition by 6.4 rebounds per game (tied with Winona State) and 3-pointers made per game with 8.9. Individually, Jared Miller is first in the conference in scoring (21.1 ppg) and tied for first in 3-pointers made (3.38 per game). Junior point guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) is ranked 10th in scoring at 14.4 points per game and third in field goal percentage (.581). Senior steady-man forward Mark Rich is ranked fourth in assists (4.38 apg), while defensive yeoman senior forward Kyle Johnson is ranked fifth in rebounding (5.9 rpg).
Nationally speaking Sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) is ranked 48th in the nation in scoring with 19.5 points per game, according to the latest NCAA Statistics Report. Junior guard Dan Fischer (Bagley, Minn.) is 15th in the nation in 3-pointers made per game with 3.4. As a team, the Wolves are ranked 14th in the nation in rebounding margin, out-boarding opponents by an average of eight caroms per game. NSU is also ranked 15th nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (40.3 percent).

NSU MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH BOB OLSON NOTCHES 300TH CAREER WIN
Feb. 3, 1999
ABERDEEN, S.D. Northern State University head men's basketball coach Bob Olson recorded his 300th career coaching victory in the Barnett Center on NSU's campus Wednesday night in a 76-62 win over Moorhead State University. The Aberdeen, S.D., native's career record, all on the sidelines at Northern, stands at 300-127.
His career win mark at NSU ranks second only to legendary NSU coach Coach Wachs, who recorded 529 career wins from 1955 to 1985. Olson played under Wachs in the mid 1970's before succeeding him as NSU's 15th basketball coach for the 1985-86 season.
Bob and his wife, Cheri, are the parents of one girl, Stephie.
Here is brief rundown history of Olson's road at Northern State:
Olson attended Northern State in the mid-1970's and played collegiate basketball for legendary coach Bob Wachs. He earned a bachelor's degree from Northern in 1977 and moved to Mayville State University where he served as an assistant coach to Pierre duCharme, Olson's basketball coach at Aberdeen Central High School.
A job in the NSU Admissions Office brought Olson back to Northern, the men's basketball program, and Coach Wachs. Olson assisted Wachs with the Wolves' basketball squad while earning a master's degree from Northern in 1980. Olson spent two years at Aberdeen Roncalli High School and coached the boys' basketball team to a 27-13 record and a conference title. He moved across town to the NSU campus in 1983 and coached the women's basketball team for two seasons. He established a 44-10 record, won a district title, and was named NAIA District 12 Coach of the Year.
When Coach Bob Wachs retired after more than 30 years and more than 500 wins, Olson was selected as NSU's 15th men's basketball coach.
After three transition seasons, Northern State basketball returned to the forefront of District 12. The 1988-89 squad played in the district championship game and the following season, Northern again returned to the district finals but this time the Wolves won the championship crown and advanced to the NAIA National Basketball Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. Olson was named the District 12 Coach of the Year.
In 1990-91, NSU repeated as district champions and returned to the national tournament. Advancing to the round of sixteen, NSU lost by one point to Taylor University. Olson was named Coach of the Year by the district, the conference and NAIA Area III.
In 1991-92, the Wolves' season ended with a semi-final loss to Dakota State.
In 1992-93, the Wolfpack opened the season as the number one ranked team in the nation and never relinquished the top spot. NSU reeled off 18 consecutive wins to begin the season and claimed the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference title. Olson was named the conference Coach of the Year. The Wolves claimed the district crown with victories over Sioux Falls College and Black Hills State and Olson was named the district coach of the year for the third time.
The Wolves won their first three games in the national tourney in Nampa, Idaho. In a hard-fought championship game against Willamette College, NSU lost for just the second time all season. Olson was named the NAIA II Coach of the Year by the Basketball Times.
National success continued in 1993-94 as NSU reached the national tournament for the fourth time in five seasons. The Wolves, who finished second in the conference, defeated St. Ambrose, Huron University and Lewis and Clark before falling in the national championship game for the second time. The Wolves lost 98-95 in overtime to Eureka College. Olson was named the Midwest Independent Region Coach of the Year.
In 1994-95, the Wolfpack started as the number one ranked team in NAIA II and entered the playoffs still in the top spot. After winning the NSIC championship, Northern posted home victories over St. Scholastica, Concordia College-St. Paul, and Dordt College to earn the Midwest Region title once again. Olson also repeated as regional Coach of the Year. The region crown entitled Olson and his Northern team to their fifth trip to nationals in six seasons. At nationals, NSU defeated Howard Payne of Texas, Alice Lloyd of Kentucky and Hastings College of Nebraska before losing in the semifinals to the host team, Northwest Nazarene of Idaho by a score of 67-62.
That marked the last appearance for Northern State at the NAIA national tournament. Beginning with the 1995-96 season, NSU began an affiliation with NCAA II and success has continued. In 1996, Northern qualified for the Division II playoffs and defeated Oakland University in the first round before being eliminated by Northern Kentucky, the team that went to finish second in the nation. In 1997, NSU moved to a new region, the North Central, and again qualified for the playoffs. The Wolves lost in an overtime game to North Dakota State. Last season, NSU was nationally ranked all year and upset South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D., to claim the North Central Region championship and earn a trip to the NCAA II Elite Eight in Louisville, Ky. Virginia Union edged the Wolves in the first round 67-63. Olson was named North Central Region Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

Feb. 2, 1999
Schedule Northern State University hosts Moorhead State University Wednesday, Feb. 3; travels to Bemidji State University Saturday, Feb. 6. Tip-off for both games is at 7:30 p.m.
300 wins this week? Head coach Bob Olson (14th season) is getting ever so close to the 300-win watermark for his career. His career coaching record, all at Northern State University, stands at 299-127. Olson is assisted by Paul Sather (first year), and Brad Christenson (seventh year). Graduate assistants are Jeff Trumbauer and Tom Webb. Student coach is Justin Forde.
Records Northern State is 15-5 overall and 5-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Moorhead State is 5-15 overall and 2-4 in the NSIC. Bemidji State is 9-11 overall and 3-3 in conference play heading into Wednesday's game against Winona State in Bemidji. Last year Northern State swept both teams last season. At home against Moorhead State, the Wolves won 102-86. On the road at Bemidji, NSU won 88-70.
Series The Wolves lead the all-time series with Moorhead 42-25. NSU leads the series with Bemidji 38-12.

Junior guard Dan Fischer led the boards crew with nine rebounds. Last season in Aberdeen, the Wolves came out on top 102-86 on the strength of 31 points by then-senior Ryan Miller. Now-junior guard Scott Hanson and Ryan Miller led the team in rebounding with eight boards apiece. POWER STRUGGLE FOR NSIC TITLE RAGES ON
Jan. 26, 1999
Schedule Northern State University hosts Southwest State University Wednesday, Jan. 27; travels to Winona State University Saturday, Jan. 30. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m.
300 wins this week? Head coach Bob Olson (14th season) is getting ever so close to the 300-win watermark for his career. His career coaching record, all at Northern State University, stands at 298-126. Olson is assisted by Paul Sather (first year), and Brad Christenson (seventh year). Graduate assistants are Jeff Trumbauer and Tom Webb. Student coach is Justin Forde.
Records Northern State is 14-4 overall and 4-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Southwest State has the second best overall record in the conference at 11-7 and is 2-2 within the conference. Winona State is tied with NSU with a flawless 4-0 mark going into Wednesday's game at Minnesota-Morris. The Warriors are currently at 8-10 overall.
Last year Northern State swept Southwest State last season. The first game in Marshall was a 93-89 overtime nail-biter, while the second had NSU coming back to Aberdeen for a 92-70 win. Now-senior Mark Rich was big on the boards in both contests, leading the Wolves with 11 and eight rebounds, respectively. In Aberdeen, then-senior Ryan Miller rang up the Mustangs for 28 points.
Winona State was the only team to hand Northern a conference loss last season. The Warriors defeated touring NSU 80-74 in the last game of the regular season. Before that, NSU handled the Warriors 75-55 at home. In the road loss, then-senior Ryan Miller led the Wolves with 22 points and seven rebounds.
Series The Wolves lead the all-time series with Southwest 39-10. Three of SSU's wins came in Aberdeen. The last time SSU won in Aberdeen was during the 1985-86 season, by a score of 63-57. The Barnett Center facility was used for NSU's home games a year later, meaning SSU has never won in the Barnett Center.
The Wolves lead the all-time series with Winona 30-13. With last season's win at Winona, the Warriors snapped a 10-game NSU winning streak. Before that, the last time WSU defeated NSU was a big upset in Aberdeen during the 1992-93 season, despite 36 points by Eric Kline. It was NSU's only regular-season loss during a 34-2 campaign that ended with NSU finishing second at the NAIA II National Tournament. In the 1990's (including the 1989-90 season), NSU leads the series 12-6.
NSU drops to 12th in national poll After losing 78-70 at now-fourth-ranked Wayne State (Neb.) last week, Northern State dropped six spots to 12th in the latest NABC/Division II Bulletin Poll released Monday. The Wolves came back at home three days later to whack Minnesota-Morris 101-78.
Mustang Minutes It would be impossible for the Wolves to overlook Southwest State Wednesday for the weekend road trip to currently NSIC-undefeated Winona State. Why? Former NSU assistant and second-year SSU coach Tim Miles, who roamed the NSU sidelines from 1989-1995 and helped NSU to five national tournaments in those six years. Last season, the Wolves defeated Miles' squad 92-70 in Aberdeen. During the 1996-97 season, Miles coached a Mayville State team that came to Wachs Arena and lost 85-68. The Mustangs are expected to be a player in the conference power struggle this season and are the only team in the NSIC other than NSU to have a winning overall record.
Junior 6-7 forward Scott Koenen leads the team in scoring and is fourth on the conference list with 19 points per conference game. He also leads the team in rebounding with eight boards per game. The other double-digit scorer on the team is 5-10 senior guard Sean Smith, who is averaging 13.3 points per game during the conference season.
Deja vu? If all goes well for NSU and WSU Wednesday, Saturday's matchup in Winona would be a clash for the lead in the NSIC between undefeated conference teams. Such was the case last season, as both WSU and NSU met in Aberdeen to determine what team would improve to a perfect 6-0 midway through the conference season. The Wolves won 75-55.
Even though new coach Mike Leaf was at WSU 11 years as an assistant, growing pains could be expected early in his first campaign, as the Warriors struggled to a 4-10 mark out of the gates this season. But since the conference season began, WSU has stepped it up considerably, winning its last four games, including an always tough road triumph at Duluth and a victory over touring Southwest State.
Junior 6-6 forward Justin Treptow leads the Warriors in scoring (15.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg). He is closely followed by sophomore forward Kyle Schlaak, who nets 15.2 points and 5.1 boards per game. Junior 6-3 guard Lance Meincke rounds out the double-digit scorers with 13.6 points per game.
Nationally speaking Sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) is ranked 39th in the nation in scoring with 20.1 points per game, according to the latest NCAA Statistics Report released today. Junior guard Dan Fischer (Bagley, Minn.) is 12th in the nation in 3-pointers made per game with 3.6, As a team, the Wolves are ranked 14th in the nation in rebounding margin, out-boarding opponents by an average of 7.8 caroms per game. NSU is also ranked eighth nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (41.1 percent) and 19th in 3-pointers made per game (8.3).
Conference leaders As a team, Northern State is ranked first in the conference in scoring offense (83.5 points per game), scoring margin (defeating NSIC opponents by an average of 15.3 points per game) and field goal percentage defense (holding opponents to 41 percent from the field). The Wolves are also first as a team in 3-pointers made per game with nine. NSU is second in the conference in rebounding margin, out-boarding the opposition by 6.5 rebounds per game (Winona is first in the NSIC with an 10 rpg edge over opponents. Individually, Jared Miller is first in the conference in scoring (22.8 ppg), 3-point field goal percentage (50 percent) and 3-pointers made (3.75 per game).
Broadcast Rob Waltman handles play-by-play duties on 93 KSDN radio (94.1 FM). Pre-game starts 20 minutes before tip-off of first Wolves game.

Then-seniors Ryan Miller and Ross Pankratz led the Wolves in the losing road effort with 16 points and 10 rebounds, respectively. The Wolves edged Morris 89-88 in Aberdeen before going to Morris and coming out with a 91-81 win. Now-junior guard Dan Fischer (Bagley, Minn.) came up big in both games against the Cougars, netting team-highs of 22 points at home and 24 points at Morris.
Series The Wolves hold slim leads in both series. NSU leads Wayne in the teams' series 12-11. NSU also leads the all-time series with Morris at 32-25.
Two of the nation's best square off Wednesday Northern State stayed put at sixth in the latest NABC/Division II Bulletin Poll released Monday. Wayne State is right behind, ranking seventh for the second straight week. South Dakota is ranked 14th.
Wildcats hot; tough to beat at home No. 7 Wayne State improved to 14-2 with a pair of victories last week. The Wildcats routed Southwest State University 84-67 at home on Wednesday before beating Rockhurst 80-73 on the road Saturday. The victories extended the Wildcats' overall winning streak to 11 games. Rice Auditorium is sure to be a loud environment when the Wolves come to town Wednesday. The Wildcats have also won 11 straight home games going back to last season, and 40 of their past 42 home games dating back to January 13, 1996. WSC is led by 6-2 senior guard Tyler Johnson, who leads the team in scoring (16.3 points per game), assists (5.6 apg) and steals (1.4 spg). Johnson shoots 53 percent from the field. Sophomore 6-3 backcourt mate Brad Joens is next on the scoring list with 13.7 points per game and trails only Johnson in assists. Senior 6-6 forward Jason Diaz rounds out the Wildcats' double-digit scorers with 10 points per game to go along with 4.1 rebounds per game. Junior 6-7 center Eric Henderson leads the team in rebounding with six caroms per game.
Miller named NSIC Player of the Week Sophomore guard Jared Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the week for his efforts last week. Miller scored game-highs of 26 points in two games to help NSU get two tough conference road wins at Moorhead State (85-69) and Minnesota-Duluth (72-63). He did most of his damage from downtown, shooting 12-of-18 (67%) from beyond the arc. Miller also earned Player of the Week honors for the last week in November this season.
Nationally speaking Miller is ranked 38th in the nation in scoring with 19.7 points per game, according to the latest NCAA Statistics Report released today. Junior guard Dan Fischer (Bagley, Minn.) is 12th in the nation in 3-pointers made per game with 3.7, As a team, the Wolves are ranked 15th in the nation in rebounding margin, out-boarding opponents by an average of 7.8 caroms per game.

WOLVES HIT THE ROAD FOR TWO KEY EARLY NSIC TESTS
Jan. 12, 1999
Schedule Northern State University travels to face Moorhead State Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m.; travels to face Minnesota-Duluth Saturday, Jan 16. at 3 p.m.
Records Northern State is 11-3 overall and 1-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Moorhead State is 3-12 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC. Minnesota-Duluth is 7-8 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Last year Northern swept its series with both Moorhead State and Duluth last season. In the game at Moorhead State last year, then-senior Ryan Miller scored 33 points to lead the Wolves to a tight 96-91 victory. Now-junior Scott Hanson led the team in rebounds with eight. The Wolves also pulled out a rare and hard-fought 93-85 win in Duluth. Senior leadership carried the team, with Ross Pankratz netting 25 and Ryan Miller pulling down 10 boards. Before that, the Wolves' last win in Duluth came during the 1993-94 season, when then-junior guard Eric Kline racked up a school record 52 points to lead NSU to a 98-80 win. Kline's mark still stands as the single regulation game points record at NSU.
Series The Wolves lead the all-time series with Moorhead 41-26. Duluth leads NSU in the teams' series 14-27.
NSU rises to 6th in national poll Northern State moved up a spot to sixth in the latest NABC/Division II Bulletin Poll released Monday. Kentucky Wesleyan defeated Southern Indiana last week to reclaim the No. 1 spot Southern Indiana held last week. Soon to be full-fledged NSIC member Wayne State (Neb.) is ranked seventh. South Dakota is ranked 20th.
Nationally speaking Junior guard Dan Fischer (Bagley, Minn.) is sixth in the nation in 3-pointers made per game with 4.1, according to the latest NCAA Statistics Report released today. As a team, the Wolves are ranked 12th in the nation in rebounding margin, out-boarding opponents by an average of 8.1 caroms per game.
Fischer close to 900 Junior guard Dan Fischer should hit his 900th career point against Moorhead State. The sharpshooter in his first full season as a starter stands at 896 career points going into this week's action.
Dragon Fire Moorhead State lost its conference opener to Winona State 95-84 last Saturday. The Dragons are led by 6-4 junior forward Tim Williams, who leads the team in scoring (14.7 ppg) and rebounding (5.9 rpg). Williams shoots nearly 50 percent from the field. Senior 6-2 forward Tunde Adelekan nets 13.9 points per game, while sophomore forward and Moorhead native Cory Tow rounds out the Dragons' double-digit scorers with 10.1 points per game. MSU's 3-12 record isn't for lack of work on the boards, as the Dragons are out-rebounding opponents by just under three boards per game.
Bulldog Bites Minnesota-Duluth is coming off a huge 73-63 conference-opening win at favored Southwest State last Saturday. The Bulldogs are led by junior 6-7 center Josh Quigley, who is ranked 30th in the nation with 21 points per game. Quigley also leads the team in rebounding (6.3 rpg) and blocks with 19 total. He shoots an impressive 54 percent from the field and 85 percent from the line. Three other Bulldogs average over 11 points per game. Indications are the Bulldogs are better than their 7-8 record indicates. UMD had a tough pre-conference schedule, which included games against the defending conference champions from the NCC (South Dakota State) and the GLIAC (Michigan Tech). The worst record of a team to defeat UMD so far this season is a hardly shabby 9-5. As a team, UMD can flat-out shoot the rock. The Bulldogs are ranked second in the nation in free throw percentage (77.8 percent) and also ranked second in 3-point percentage (44.5 percent). UMD shoots 46 percent from the field.
Broadcast Rob Waltman handles play-by-play duties on 93 KSDN radio (94.1 FM). Pre-game starts 20 minutes before tip-off of first Wolves game.
Closing in on 300 Head coach Bob Olson (14th season) is getting closer to the 300-win watermark for his career. His career coaching record, all at Northern State University, stands at 295-125. Olson is assisted by Paul Sather (first year), and Brad Christenson (seventh year). Graduate assistants are Jeff Trumbauer and Tom Webb. Student coach is Justin Forde.

TOUGH NORTH DAKOTA ROAD TRIP ON HORIZON
November 30, 1998
Wolves to encounter Bison, Sioux Northern State University will travel to face North Dakota State Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. and North Dakota Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m.
Series Northern State has played North Dakota State 11 times, with the Bison leading the series 8-3. The series dates back to the 1906-07 season, when NDSU was known as North Dakota Agricultural College. The last time the teams met was in the 1996-97 NCAA II North Central Regional playoffs. The Bison won 90-89 despite 32 points from then-junior guard Ryan Miller (now with the IBA's Fargo-Moorhead Beez). Then-sophomore forward Kyle Johnson, now a senior for the Wolves, led NSU on the boards with 10 rebounds. The last time NSU won in this series was during the 1909-1910 season by a whopping score of 32-16.
In his 14 years at the helm, NSU head coach Bob Olson has never faced North Dakota. Northern State has played the Sioux 15 times, with UND leading the series 13-2. The last time the teams played was during the 1978-79 season, with UND coming out on top 87-60. The last time the Wolves beat North Dakota was during the 1955-56 season by a score of 67-56.
Records Northern State is 5-1 overall. North Dakota State is 3-0, while North Dakota is 3-2 entering Tuesday's game at Moorhead State.
Bison Bits The Bison have five players averaging double digits in points, led by 6-2 senior guard Leonard Prescott's 15.3 points per game. Adding 14.7 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game is 6-4 junior forward Derek Hodges. So far this season, the Bison have defeated Minnesota-Crookston (101-67), Moorhead State (77-69) and Jamestown College (83-71).
Sioux Scout NSU prepares for the long haul to Grand Forks with one thought foremost in mind: hold the Mustard. That is, 6-7 junior forward Chad Mustard, who leads the Fighting Sioux in scoring (16.4 ppg), rebounding (6.2 rpg) and blocked shots (1.2 bpg). Senior guard Hunter Berg leads the team in assists (3.2 apg) and adds 12.4 points per game. So far this season, the Sioux have chalked up wins against the University of Mary (86-58), Valley City State (76-52) and Bemidji State (76-62), while losing to Central Washington (85-77) and Seattle-Pacific (92-62).
Home streak snapped last week After defending home court against Mount Senario College (97-65) and Michigan Tech (88-78) to run its winning streak in Wachs Arena to 20 straight, NSU fell to Nebraska-Kearney in a barburner 117-110. The Wolves hosted Michigan Tech (defending Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champs) and Nebraska-Kearney (defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champs) as part of the 1998 NSU Thanksgiving Classic, which also included Moorhead State. NSU THANKSGIVING TOURNEY FEATURES COMPETITIVE FIELD
November 25, 1998
Tourney Preview This year's Thanksgiving Classic features a highly competitive field in Michigan Tech, Moorhead State, Nebraska-Kearney and Northern State. In addition to NSU, which is returning strong from an Elite Eight appearance and North Central Region title last season, the classic has two other nationally-ranked teams in addition to what looks to be a very improved fellow NSIC team.
Michigan Tech posted a 21-10 record last season, captured the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season title, and advanced to the NCAA II playoffs for the first time in 35 years.
Among the Huskies' top returnees are forward Jeff Boinski, a two-time All-GLIAC North Division First Team Selection, and forward Brian Dukes, who was Division II's third-rated three-point shooter a year ago. MTU is ranked 18th in the nation according to Dick Vitale's pre-season Division II college basketball poll. So far this season, MTU is 2-1 after defeating Minnesota-Morris 88-64 in the opener then falling 58-61 to Westminster in the Huskies' home opener. The Huskies bounced back Monday night at Minnesota-Duluth with an 81-68 victory.
Moorhead State is 1-3. The Dragons' have suffered two close defeats, the first of which was at Mayville State (73-71). The Comets are ranked eighth nationally in NAIA II. The other loss came at the hands of NCC and cross-town rival North Dakota State (77-69).
The Dragons return first-team All-NSIC selection Tunde Adelekan, who began to show signs of what was to come at last year's NSU Classic.
Nebraska-Kearney was ranked as high as 13th in the nation and was ranked
in virtually every preseason poll. NSU ended UNK's season in the NCAA II
North Central Regional playoffs with a 92-86 win last season. The Lopers
return Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year Eric Strand
from last year's 25-6 squad. Strand averaged 20 points per game last season.
So far this season, the Lopers are 3-0 after defeating Hastings 91-71
and Concordia 94-74. On Monday night, UNK dispatched Nebraska-Omaha 89-76.
Here is the tournament schedule:
Friday, Nov. 27
Moorhead State vs. Nebraska-Kearney, 5:30 p.m.
Northern State vs. Michigan Tech, 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 28
Moorhead State vs. Michigan Tech, 5:30 p.m.
Northern State vs. Nebraska-Kearney, 7:30 p.m.
Series The series between Northern State and Michigan Tech
stands at 3-1 in favor of NSU. The last time the teams played was in the
NSU Holiday Tourney during the 1996-97 season, when NSU, like this season,
had the chance to go 5-0 by beating the Huskies. The Wolves won 80-75 behind
21 points from Ryan Miller and 10 rebounds from Ross Pankratz.
The Wolves lead the series with Nebraska-Kearney 7-5. The last time the teams played was last season in the NCAA II North Central Regional Playoffs, with NSU coming out on top 92-86. Ross Pankratz led the way with 23 points while then-sophomore Dan Fischer (Bagley, Minn.) pulled down a career-high nine rebounds. The last time UNK visited Aberdeen was during the 1995-96 season, with the Lopers coming out on top 101-84.
Last week The Wolves notched three wins, at Huron University
79-74; vs. St. Cloud State University 75-63 and vs. Mount Senario College
(Tuesday, Nov. 24) 97-65.
Injuries Starting sophomore center Ben Dahl (Cottonwood, Minn.) re-injured
his right foot during practice last week and is listed as probable for
this weekend.
Sweet home, Wachs Arena Northern State is on a 19-game winning streak in Wachs Arena. The Wolves last defeat at home came Feb. 15, 1997 to Minnesota-Duluth. In the nineties (including the 1989-90 season), NSU 142-15 at home (90 percent).
Broadcast Rob Waltman handles play-by-play duties on 93 KSDN radio (94.1 FM). Pre-game starts 20 minutes before tip-off of first Wolves game.

November 12, 1998
Comets coming to Aberdeen Northern State University will host Mayville State in the Wolves season opener Sunday, Nov. 15. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 in the Barnett Center (8,000 capacity) after the women's game against Huron University, which is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Series Northern State will face Mayville State for the 40th time Sunday, with the Wolves leading the series 30-9. Last year, NSU needed a buzzer beater to knock off the Comets 81-78 in Wachs Arena.
About the Comets Mayville State opened the season with a 107-73 rout over the University of Winnipeg Nov. 11. The Comets, fresh off an NAIA II Elite Eight appearance, are ranked eighth in the nation by the NAIA II Preseason Coaches Poll. Second-year head coach Paul Grove returns All-NDCAC and All-American honorable mention junior guard Aaron Thompson to the lineup. The Comets have no seniors on this year's roster.
Last year In only its third year under NCAA II, Northern State finished 27-5 and earned its first trip to the Elite Eight Tournament in Louisville, Ky., by defeating host team South Dakota State 88-82 in the North Central Regional Championship. The Wolves fell to Virginia Union in the first round of the Elite Eight, 67-63. NSU lost three senior starters from that team, including First Team All-American guard Ryan Miller and All-Conference post Ross Pankratz.
Wolves ranked nationally After last season's North Central Region Championship and Elite Eight appearance, NSU is ranked in every Division II poll coming out this season. Sunday contest Nov. 22, when St. Cloud State comes to town.
1998-99 Season Outlook
In only their third year under NCAA Division II, the Wolves earned a trip to the Elite Eight last season. For the program to repeat that lofty feat in 1998-99, many questions will have to be answered.
Topping the list is finding a way to overcome losing to graduation three players that led NSU to four straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference titles. First-Team All-American guard Ryan Miller (finished ninth in the nation in scoring), All-Conference post Ross Pankratz and steady forward Dustin Undlin are gone from the starting lineup, leaving big shoes to fill.
New leadership roles will be thrust upon senior forwards Kyle Johnson and Mark Rich, as well as junior point guard Scott Hanson and sharpshooting junior wing Dan Fischer.
Along with outstanding ball-handling and passing abilities, Hanson has proven the past two years while starting at the point that he is also a threat to score. Johnson looks to come back strong after a knee injury sidelined him late last season. A defensive specialist, Johnson is also an incredible leaper and strong finisher in transition. Rich's passing and scoring abilities in the paint and on the perimeter will add versatility to the post, while the pure stroke of Fischer can easily strike for over 20 points on any given night. In his young career, sophomore guard Jared Miller has already proven the ability to make plays and could end up being one of the X-factors to NSU's success this season.
What the Wolves lost in post experience is made up for in beef. Joining 6-foot-9, 260-pound sophomore center Ben Dahl who missed much of last season with a foot injury in the post this season are redshirt freshmen Andy Foster (6-7, 260) and Brad Hansen (6-8, 240). The big three figure to make NSU a force in the paint and on the boards this season.
With another solid recruiting class and a strong cast of up-and-coming players, NSU won't easily loosen its four-year stranglehold on the NSIC title and will figure big into any pre-season prognostications about post-season play.

Sather Returns to NSU Men's Basketball
July 1, 1998
ABERDEEN, S.D. The Northern State University mens basketball program hired former player Paul Sather to the head assistant position, which he begins today. The 6-7 Sather was a crowd favorite for the Wolves from 1990-1994, often creating excitement during games with high-flying dunks. He returns to Aberdeen with hopes of helping keep the excitement at a fever pitch as the Wolves come back from their first-ever Elite Eight appearance and defend the North Central Region championship.
Its just good to be back here, Sather said. This program has had a huge influence on me. There are always good people involved in every part of the program. When youre around people like that, its not so much the basketball I missed while I was gone, it was the people I was with and the relationships I developed.
After a career on the court that included three NAIA national tournament appearances (NSU had two runner-up finishes in 1993 and 1994), Sather served as a student assistant at NSU during the 1995-96 season. He then landed a job as physical education teacher and assistant boys basketball coach at Sidney High School in Nebraska. But he soon developed the desire to return to college hoops, and spent last season as a graduate assistant at Wayne State University (Neb.).
It was a tough decision to leave (Sidney) at the time, but I look back on it now, and it was a no-brainer, Sather said. I liked teaching high school, but I missed what college was all about; I missed working with that type of athlete.
Head coach Bob Olson is glad he made the decision to coach college basketball and welcomes his former player back in the system.
Its really exciting to have Paul back in our program, Olson said. Hes really an outstanding person and were fortunate to have him back.
Sather believes his playing days in the post on Olsons teams will help him on the sidelines as he takes charge of Northerns post players.
Ive been with coach (Olson) as a player; Ive been through the battles on the court, so Ill know what our guys are going through, Sather said. I also think Ive really developed as a post coach. Ive learned a lot from Coach Mack (head coach Greg McDermott) at Wayne, who was excellent at instructing post, and that added to what I picked up on the court here from Tim Miles (former NSU assistant in charge of post during Sathers playing days).
Sather takes the place of Mike Hultz, who resigned to take the head mens job at Minot State University in early May.
