A 21-6 Wildcat run to start the second half turned a one-time seven-point Northern State lead early in the second stanza into an 11 point hole with 13 minutes to play. Against the team picked by many to win the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference title this season, against much of the returning cast from last year's Wayne team which rose to as high as third-ranked in the nation, against the partisan and audible crowd at WSC's Rice Auditorium, that deficit spurred by that half-opening run did in the Wolves in Friday's 71-58 loss to Wayne State.
NSU took a 28-24 lead into the locker room and started the second half with senior point guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) hitting a 3-pointer to give NSU a seven-point bulge. But the Wolves would only score one more time in the next seven minutes while Wayne found its mark after struggling offensively the first half. Wayne would ride the momentum of that run and lead by as many as 17 points. The Wolves whittled the lead down to nine points a few times after that, but it was as close as NSU would come.
Junior guard Jared Miller (Mitchell) led NSU with 17 points. Senior forward Dan Fischer recorded another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Wayne was led by Eric Henderson's 18 points and had four players score in double digits.
NSU dropped to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC, while Wayne State improved
to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC. The game was Wayne's first ever conference
game as a full-fledged NSIC basketball member.
