MEN'S BASKETBALL PROGRAM COMPLETES RECRUITING SEASON WITH SIGNING OF WILLIAMS

May 16, 2000

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University's men's basketball program announced today the signing of 5-foot-11 point guard Roland Williams to a National Letter of Intent.

Williams spent two seasons at Trinidad State College (Trinidad, Colo.) before transferring to NCAA Division I Stephen F. Austin University (Nacogdoches, Texas) last season. There, the Forth Worth, Texas native suffered a herniated disk and received a medical redshirt for the 1999-2000 season.

At Trinidad, Williams was a first-team all-conference and first-team all-region performer. He was also named the school's student-athlete of the year in 1998-99, when he averaged 15 points, five assists and five steals per game. Williams attended Arlington Heights High School in Fort Worth and was a three-time all-district performer. As a senior, he also earned 4A All-State honorable mention honors after averaging 21 points, five assists and five steals per game.

"We think Roland can really be a leader for us at the point guard position," NSU assistant coach Paul Sather said. "He really fits in well with our guys and will be a great fit for our team. He is an excellent defender but is also very skilled offensively."
NSU head coach Don Meyer doesn't expect Williams' injury to affect him this winter and said his latest signing would be the last for this recruiting year.

"Roland has bounced right back from his back surgery and we really think he'll be nothing but a plus for our program," Meyer said. "One of the big keys for us in recruiting a point guard was getting a player with the ability to give us the full-court ball pressure that Matt Sevareid supplied us with last year. I think the main thing that attracted Roland to NSU was that the people both on-campus and in the community were so friendly and genuine. Coming from a larger metropolitan area, I think he was impressed by that."

Williams joins five other recruits who will suit up for the Wolves this winter. NSU's early signees were Dustin Hjelmeland, a 6-5 all-state forward from Staples-Motley (Minn.) and Tony Birmingham, a 6-4 all-state guard from Moorhead, Minn. Signed after the 1999-2000 season were Jason Rowen, a 6-1 all-conference guard from Aberdeen Central; Houston Reed, a 6-7 all-region power forward from Otero Junior College (La Junta, Colo.); and Drew Gruver, a 6-4 guard from Garden City Community College (Kan.).

"I'm really pleased with this class; it has a good blend of experience and youthful potential," Meyer said. "The best thing about the class is the fact that our returning players more or less hand-picked these kids as people they wanted as their teammates. Each one of our new players will bring something to our program they can do especially well while staying in the context of our team concept."

DREW GRUVER SIGNS ON WITH NORTHERN MEN'S BASKETBALL PROGRAM

May 11, 2000

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University's men's basketball program announced today the signing of Drew Gruver, a 6-foot-4 guard from Garden City Community College (Kan.), to a National Letter of Intent.

Gruver started 40 straight games at GCCC, helping the school to a 47-18 record during his two seasons there. That mark is the second best in the highly competitive Jayhawk West Conference, which is considered one of the best junior college conferences in the nation and develops many players that transfer to Division I schools. Gruver averaged 11.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3 assists per game last season. But his value to Garden City's team went much deeper than his statline.

"Drew is a great team guy," GCCC head coach Jeremy Cox said. "He guarded the opponent's best player every night for us. He's unselfish, he knows how to play and most of all he makes his teammates better."

The Scott City, Kan., native was an all-league, all-area and all-state performer in high school. NSU head coach Don Meyer expects the junior to be an immediate contributor to the team this winter.

"Drew has one thing on his mind when he's playing basketball in practice or in a game, and that's how he can make his team better," Meyer said. "He fit right in with our players on the campus visit and said the deciding factor in his coming here was that he was convinced our guys were committed to a team concept and that was something he wanted to be a part of. I think that's impressive."

NSU SIGNS JC STANDOUT HOUSTON REED

April 25, 2000

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Junior College standout Houston Reed has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend and play basketball at Northern State University. NSU men's basketball coach Don Meyer made that announcement today.

Reed, a 6-foot-7 power forward, averaged 19 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season for Otero Junior College in LaJunta, Colo.  With Reed in the lineup the past two seasons, Otero won two subregion championships and posted a 39-17 overall record. As a team captain last season, Reed was a first-team all-region selection. He's also a two-time academic all-region selection at Otero.

Reed is a 1997 graduate of Olathe High School (Olathe, Colo.), where he was an all-state and two-time all-conference performer.  A two-time team captain there, he was also his team's offensive MVP as well as the squad's rebounding champion. He holds single-game scoring records for both Otero (46 points) and Olathe (39 points).

With his impressive list of accomplishments, Northern wasn't Reed's only suitor. He also made visits to Nebraska-Kearney, North Dakota, Alaska-Anchorage and Biola University in La Mirada, Calif. (Biola advanced to the NAIA Final Four the past two seasons).

"We are happy Houston decided to be a Wolf," Meyer said. "He has the necessary attitude, work ethic and athletic ability to make a great contribution to our program and will certainly help in developing our team attitude. He really enjoyed his visit here and developed an instant rapport with our players.

The only real decision he has right now is he doesn't know how many shotguns to bring to Aberdeen to satisfy his fondness for ducks, pheasants and geese," Meyer said.

MEN'S BASKETBALL PROGRAM SIGNS CENTRAL STANDOUT ROWEN

April 12, 2000

ABERDEEN, S.D. –.Northern State University's men's basketball program announced today the signing of Aberdeen Central standout Jason Rowen to a National Letter of Intent.

The 6-foot-1 guard was an All-Eastern South Dakota Conference performer for Central during his senior season and helped the Golden Eagles to a 19-4 overall mark and second-place finish in the conference.

"We're very excited about the opportunity to work with Jason and his development as a point guard," NSU head men's basketball coach Don Meyer said. "His ability to pressure the ball and to exert leadership on floor was enhanced by a great senior year in Aberdeen Central's basketball program. We feel that Jason is the type of player who will do the things necessary to help his team win championships."

MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM GEARS UP FOR REGULAR SEASON HOME FINALE

Feb. 9, 2000

SCHEDULE — Northern State University will host its final two games of the regular season this week against Bemidji State University Friday, Feb. 11 and University of Minnesota-Duluth Saturday, Feb. 12. Tip-off for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.

RECORDS — NSU is 10-11 overall and 7-6 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Bemidji State is 8-12 overall and 6-6 in the NSIC. UM-Duluth is 12-11 overall and 9-3 in the conference entering Friday’s game at Minnesota-Morris.

HANSON ON THE MOVE — Senior guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) became the 36th member of NSU’s career 1,000-point club against Southwest State earlier this season, tying a career high with 24 points in the game. Hanson, in his fourth year as a starting guard for the Wolves, missed the first part of the season due to an ankle injury. Going into this week, he sits at 34th on NSU’s all-time scoring list with 1,062 points. Next on the list are a cluster of NSU greats. At No. 33 is Mike Vogel, who scored 1,075 points from 1967-70. Sitting at No. 32 is Steve Vlk, who netted 1,081 points from 1980-84. At No. 31 is Bob Graham, who scored 1,083 points from 1965-68. Hanson is an all-region and GTE Academic All-America candidate. He earned honorable mention honors from Successful Farming magazine’s 1999-2000 All-American Farm Team.

SERIES –– Northern State and Bemidji State meet for the 53rd time Friday. NSU leads that series 39-13. Northern State and Minnesota-Duluth meet for the 45th time Saturday. UMD leads the all-time series 28-16.

BEMIDJI STATE SCOUT — Bemidji State has won two of its last three games and is led by a pair of Smiths. Junior 6-7 forward Mac Smith leads the team in scoring and rebounding, netting nearly 18 points per game to go with 6.5 rebounds per contest. Right behind is 6-4 senior forward Larry Smith, who is second on the team in both categories with 13.2 ppg to go with 5.7 rpg. Rounding out BSU’s double-digit scorers on the season is 6-3 junior guard Chad Nelson, who nets 10 ppg and also leads the team in assists and steals.

LAST TIME vs. BSU – After a six-minute scoreless drought down the stretch cost Northern State a win at Minnesota-Duluth just a day before, the scene was hauntingly familiar a night later at Bemidji State in NSU's 77-70 loss at Bemidji State Jan. 8.

NSU held a 60-59 lead with five mintes, 23 seconds remaining, but managed to score just two points in the next five minutes to allow Bemidji State run up a 13-point lead in the final minute of the game.

UM-DULUTH SCOUT — Duluth is right in the thick of the conference race after winning five straight NSIC games at home. The Bulldogs have been hot since the turn of the century, winning nine of their last 10 games. UMD is led by reigning NSIC MVP Josh Quigley, a 6-7 senior center who puts up over 21 points per game on 59 percent shooting and also leads the team in rebounding with 8.1 caroms per contest. Providing perimeter problems for opponents is 6-2 sophomore guard Jake Nettleton, who averages 11.3 ppg on 47 percent shooting and leads the team in steals. Rounding out the team’s double-digit performers is 6-8 sophomore Chris Stanley, who puts up 11.1 ppg to go with 4.4 rpg.

LAST TIME vs. UMD — With a five-point lead and six minutes remaining in the game, it looked as if Northern State might win its third straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game and begin rolling again with what would have been a big road win at Minnesota-Duluth Jan. 7.

But then the wheels fell off. NSU failed to score in the final six minutes of the game, allowing Duluth to come back and post an 82-74 win. The late lid on the basket dropped NSU's shooting percentage for the second half to 32 percent after the Wolves shot 49 percent in the first half and continued to produce points early in the second half.

NSU held Quigley to just eight points. But UMD made up for it with great balance. Five Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by Stanley's 19 points.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE CLUB — Northern State has had six double-double performances this season:
12/6 Dan Fischer vs. Mount Senario 13 points, 10 rebounds
12/11 Dan Fischer at Wayne State 11 points, 10 rebounds
1/15 Brad Hansen vs. UM-Morris 12 points, 13 rebounds(13 boards a career high for Hansen)
1/15 Sundance Wicks vs. UM-Morris 17 points, 10 rebounds (both career highs for Wicks)
1/22 Ben Dahl vs. Winona State 19 points, 12 rebounds (both career highs for Dahl)
2/4 Sundance Wicks vs. UM-Crookston 16 points, 10 rebounds

COACHING STAFF — NSU head coach Don Meyer is in his first season at Northern State. Meyer reached the 700-win plateau faster than any other coach in the history of collegiate basketball. He ranks 17th on college basketball’s all-time winningest coaches list. Coming into the season, Meyer’s career record was 702-220 in 27 seasons. Most of his success came at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., the last 24 years. Meyer’s Lipscomb Bison won an NAIA national championship in 1986. Hanson, in his fourth year as NSU’s starting point guard, missed the first part of the season due to an ankle injury. Going into this week, he sits at 998 career points. Hanson earned honorable mention honors from Successful Farming’s 1999-2000 All-American Farm Team.

SOUTHWEST SCOUT — Southwest State has won three of its last four games. The Mustangs are led by 6-7 junior forward Scott Koenen, who pours in over 18 points per game on 57 percent shooting and also grabs a team-high 6.6 rebounds per contest. A steal by upstart freshman Ben Rops that led to a bucket by junior post Ben Dahl tied NSU's biggest lead of the game at 73-68 with 4:40 remaining in the second half. But that momentum builder was doused on SSU's next possession by a Jacob Fahl 3-pointer by that led to a tide-turning 13-2 Southwest run.

NSU shot well despite the always raucous conditions on "Hawaiian Night" in SSU's R/A Facility, hitting 48 percent from the field for the game. But the Mustangs shot the lights out in the second half at a 60 percent clip and were also aided by frequent trips to the charity stripe. The Mustangs visited the free-throw line 20 more times than did NSU (36-16) on the night.
Freshman forward Sundance Wicks led NSU with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting and also grabbed five boards. Scott Koenen scored 25 to lead the Mustangs.

SERIES NOTES — The Wolves lead the all-time series with Southwest 40-11. Three of SSU's wins came in Aberdeen. The last time SSU won in Aberdeen was during the 1985-86 season, by a score of 63-57. The Barnett Center facility was used for NSU's home games a year later, meaning SSU has never won in the Barnett Center.

Next on the scoring list is 6-6 senior forward Jon Dolliver, who nets 12.8 ppg; and 6-6 junior guard Nathan Mulder (11.9 ppg). Manning the boards is 6-7 senior center Eric Henderson, who rips down over 10 rebounds per game to go with 9.4 ppg.

Hanson led all scorers with a career-high 24 points and tied for the game lead in rebounds with eight. NORTHERN STATE TO HOST CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL; WINONA STATE

Jan. 19, 2000

SCHEDULE — Northern State University continues its five-game homestand by hosting conference newcomer Concordia University-St. Paul Friday, Jan. 21 and Winona State University Saturday, Jan. 22. Both games are slated to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. in the Barnett Center.

RECORDS — NSU is 6-9 overall and 3-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Concordia-St. Paul is 6-11 overall and 2-5 in the NSIC. Winona State sits atop the conference standings with a 7-0 league mark and 10-5 overall record entering Friday’s game at Minnesota-Morris.

C-SP SCOUT — Concordia-St. Paul has won two of its last four games (wins over Minnesota-Crookston and Bemidji State, loss to Minnesota-Duluth). Endo Aranbarri, a transfer from Southwest State, has come off the bench to lead the team in scoring with 9.1 points per game, while Ben Bauer leads the boards crew with 5.8 rebounds per game.

LAST TIME vs. C-SP – The Northern men bounced Concordia-St. Paul out of the 1993-94 Midwest Independent Regionals with a 106-84 win. Lance Luitjens led the Wolves with 33 points, while Kevin Burckhard and Eric Kline pulled down seven rebounds apiece to lead NSU to the win. The Wolves would go on to finish second in the NAIA II National Tournament that season.

WSU SCOUT — Winona State is on a seven-game winning streak entering Friday’s game at Minnesota-Morris. The Warriors got the conference season off to a roaring start with two huge wins over conference favorites Wayne State and Southwest State on their NSIC home-opening weekend. WSU is led by senior 6-6 forward Justin Treptow, who leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 18.9 points on 60 percent shooting and seven rebounds per game. Junior 6-6 forward Kyle Schlaak adds 14.5 points per game and leads the team in steals, while 6-4 senior guard Lance Meincke chips in 12.9 ppg to round out WSU’s double-digit scorers.

SERIES — Northern State leads the all-time series with Winona State 31-14.

LAST YEAR VS WSU — NSU split with Winona State last season, losing at Winona 75-82 before winning 99-79 in the regular season finale at home.

Last year, the game in Aberdeen was a battle for the conference championship and would also determine which team would move on to the post-season. Winona State came to the Barnett Center first in the conference at 10-1, while Northern stood at 9-2. The defending North Central Region champion Wolves needed a win not only to secure a share of their fifth straight NSIC title, but also for the right to move on to the regional tournament. NSU held the tiebreaker advantage over Winona due to a better record during the non-conference season.

Thanks in part to sizzling shooting and 6,000 frenzied fans, the Wolves scored an emphatic 99-79 win. NSU set a school record for 3-point percentage in a game, going an unheard of 18-of-22 from beyond the arc (82 percent). In addition to succeeding in their drive for five straight NSIC championships, the Wolves also didn't break their string of national tournament runs. NSU has made a national tournament appearance in each of its four years under NCAA II since joining the affiliation for the 1995-96 season.

HANSON NEARING 1,000 — Senior guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) will likely break the 1,000-point career mark this season. Hanson, in his fourth year as NSU’s starting point guard, missed the first part of the season due to an ankle injury. Going into this week, he sits at 972 career points. Hanson earned honorable mention honors from Successful Farming’s 1999-2000 All-America Farm Team.

CONFERENCE LEADERS — Northern State ranks second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 3-pointers made and 3-point field goal percentage, according to the latest conference statistical package released Monday. The Wolves are hitting 9.7 treys per game at a 41 percent clip as a team during conference play.
Individually, senior guard Matt Sevareid (Mitchell) is second in the NSIC in 3-point field goal percentage, hitting 58 percent from downtown. Fellow senior guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) ranks second in the conference in assists, doling out 4.5 per conference game.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE CLUB — Northern State has had four double-double performances this season:
12/6 Dan Fischer vs. Mount Senario 13 points, 10 rebounds
12/11 Dan Fischer at Wayne State 11 points, 10 rebounds
1/15 Brad Hansen vs. UM-Morris 12 points, 13 rebounds
1/15 Sundance Wicks vs. UM-Morris 17 points, 10 rebounds

Meyer is assisted by Paul Sather (2nd year), Brad Christenson (8th year), Tom Webb (2nd year) and Arly Ohm (1st year). Justin Forde and Kyle Jordan serve as student assistants.

MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM TRAVELS TO FACE UM-DULUTH, BEMIDJI STATE

Jan. 6, 2000

SCHEDULE — Northern State University travels to face University of Minnesota-Duluth Friday, Jan. 7; travels to face Bemidji State University Saturday, Jan. 8. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

RECORDS — NSU is 5-7 and 2-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Minnesota-Duluth is 4-10 overall and 1-2 in the NSIC. Bemidji State is 3-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference entering Friday’s game against Minnesota-Morris.

SERIES –– Northern State and Minnesota-Duluth meet for the 44th time Friday. UMD leads the all-time series 27-16. Northern State and Bemidji State meet for the 52nd time Saturday. NSU leads that series 39-12.

MINNESOTA-DULUTH SCOUT — After getting off to a slow start, UMD has won two of its last four games entering this week. The Bulldogs are led by 6-7 senior center Josh Quigley, who is ranked nationally in scoring with 21.2 points per game at a 56 percent shooting clip to go along with a team-high 6.2 rebounds per contest. Also a force in the paint is 6-8 sophomore forward Chris Stanley, who averages nearly 10 ppg. Sophomore 6-2 guard Jake Nettleton provides solid perimeter play, leading the team in steals and scoring over 11 points per game.

BEMIDJI STATE SCOUT — The Beavers are led by a pair of Smiths. The first, 6-7 junior forward Mac Smith, leads the team in scoring and rebounding with over 15 points and seven rebounds per game. The second, 6-4 senior forward Larry Smith, is right behind with nearly 15 points and over six rebounds per contest. Junior 6-3 guard Chad Nelson adds 10 ppg and leads the team in assists and steals.

LAST YEAR VS UMD — NSU swept Duluth last season. In Duluth, a Northern State team ranked sixth in the nation overcame a seven-point first half deficit and cold early shooting to pick up a 72-63 win at Minnesota-Duluth to get an early jump on the conference standings at 3-0.

The Wolves shot just 33 percent and were down 30-23 after the first half, but came out of the locker room with an 11-4 run that tied the score at 34-34 and turned the tide of the game.

Jared Miller (Mitchell) shouldered much of the team's scoring after that, exploding for 20 of the team's 38 points after the Wolves' initial run in the second stanza. Miller ended with a game-high 26 points. Forward Kyle Johnson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) ripped down a game-high 11 boards to go along with four assists. Senior forward Mark Rich (Aberdeen) chipped in 11 points, eight boards and six assists. Chris Stanley led UMD with 16 points. Later in the year, NSU defeated UMD 75-63 at home.

LAST YEAR VS BSU — NSU swept BSU last season. First, the Wolves scored a 76-63 win at home to open conference play.

Later in the season, NSU went to Bemidji and came out on top 105-89. Jared Miller (Mitchell) exploded for a career-high 38 points in NSU's 105-89 win at Bemidji State.

Miller went 13-of-21 from the field and 8-of-16 from behind the arc to post NSU's greatest single-game point production since his oldest brother, Ryan Miller, netted 45 points to carry the Wolves over South Dakota State and onto the Elite Eight in the North Central Region Championship in Brookings during the 1997-98 season.

The Wolves took charge of the game early and went into halftime with a 48-35 lead. Miller wasn't alone in his excellent shooting, as NSU shot an incredible 63 percent from the floor as a team. BSU also shot a sizzling 58 percent for the game, but couldn't cool down the Wolves, who started hot and finished blistering. NSU shot 77 percent as a team in the second half.

Post Brad Hansen (Tea) also posted a career high with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including an emphatic, two-fisted dunk that squeezed the the last breath out of a mini-run BSU had put together late in the game.

Junior guard Dan Fischer, playing in front of many of his fans who made the trip from his hometown of Bagley, (located 25 miles from Bemidji) came out of the game after scoring 10 points with a serious foot injury that plagued him the rest of the season.

FISCHER SHOOTS TO 27th — Senior forward Dan Fischer (Bagley, Minn.) hit the 1,000 career-point plateau during the first game of the season against Jamestown this year. Last week, he shot up five spots on NSU’s scoring list. Going into the week, Fischer rests at 1,104 career points and is 27th On the way, he passed some historical names in NSU basketball: Steve Vlk (1980-84); Bob Graham (1965-68); Jay Smith (1986-87, 1988-91); Rich Andrezejewski (1970-72; 1973-74). He last passed Marv Rasmussen (1,102 points from 1956-59). Sitting at No. 26 is Jason Boike, who scored 1,142 points from 1986-90. At No. 25 is Sarge Grimes, who scored 1,158 points from 1988-91.

HANSON NEARING 1,000 — Senior point guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) will likely break the 1,000-point career mark this season. Hanson, in his fourth year as NSU’s starting point guard, is recovering from ankle surgery and working his way back to 100 percent on the court. Going into this week, he sits at 956 career points.

COACHING STAFF — NSU head coach Don Meyer is in his first season at Northern State. Meyer ranks 17th on college basketball’s all-time winningest coaches list. Coming into the season, Meyer’s career record was 702-220 in 27 seasons. Most of his success came at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., the last 24 years. MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM HOSTS NORTH DAKOTA STATE BEFORE HOLIDAY HIATUS

Dec. 16, 1999

SCHEDULE — Northern State University hosts North Dakota State University Saturday, Dec. 18. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

FRANCHISE GAME —  Northern State University's Athletic Department declared Saturday's men's basketball game against North Dakota State as the department's Franchise Game in support of student-athletic scholarships. The prices for Saturday's game, which starts at 7 p.m., are as follows:
$8 for adults
$4 for students K-12
Wolves Club and Student Activity passes will be honored.

RECORDS — NSU is 3-6 and 0-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. North Dakota State is 6-2 overall and 0-0 in the North Central Conference.

LAST WEEK — Northern State picked up a home victory over Mount Senario (Ladysmith, Wis.) before starting the NSIC schedule with no doubt the toughest weekend road trip the league has to offer in men’s hoops. The Wolves dropped decisions at Wayne State and Southwest State.

SERIES –– Northern State has played North Dakota State 12 times, with the Bison leading the series 8-4. The series dates back to the 1906-07 season, when NDSU was known as North Dakota Agricultural College.

Last season, Northern State went to Fargo, N.D. and overwhelmed North Dakota State in the second half to come away with a 79-65 win. The Wolves fought back from an early deficit to take the lead going into halftime 33-31. In the second half, NSU took over physically and finished plays that weren't going down in the first half to dictate the game.

Guard Jared Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) led the way with 21 points to go with three assists and three steals. In all, five Wolves reached double digits in a balanced offensive effort. Before last season, the last time NSU won in this series was during the 1909-1910 season by a score of 32-16.

NDSU’s last win over NSU was in the 1996-97 NCAA II North Central Regional playoffs. The Bison won 90-89 despite 32 points from then-junior guard Ryan Miller. Forward Kyle Johnson led NSU on the boards with 10 rebounds.
North Dakota State has not visited Aberdeen in modern times. Before the 1996-97 meeting, the last time the teams played was during the 1972-73 season — a 79-66 win for NDSU in Fargo. Before that, the teams squared off in 1968-69 — a 94-69 NDSU win in a holiday tournament in the Sioux Falls Arena. Before that, the teams hadn’t met since the 1939-40 season. Records of where that game was played, as well as the ones before it, weren’t taken.

SWEET HOME, WACHS ARENA — After suffering three losses during the season’s — and perhaps the nation’s — toughest week-long road swing (at South Dakota State, at Wayne State, at Southwest State), a Wolves win at home against NDSU would quell upset stomachs heading into the holiday season and into the heart of the conference season around the corner in January. All of NSU’s wins so far this season have been at home.

NORTH DAKOTA STATE SCOUT — The Bison defeated Minnesota-Crookston 80-67 Tuesday. NDSU is led by senior 6-4 guard Jason Retzlaff, who averages nearly 17 points per game. Senior 6-5 forward Danny English leads the team in rebounding with nearly seven per game to go with 10.6 ppg.

FISCHER CLIMBING — Senior forward Dan Fischer (Bagley, Minn.) hit the 1,000 career-point plateau during the first game of the season against Jamestown this year. Going into the week, Fischer rests at 1,075 career points and is tied for 32nd on NSU’s all-time scoring list with Mike Vogel, who scored 1,075 points from 1967-70. Next on the list is No. 31 Steve Vlk (1,081 points from 1980-84) and No. 30 Bob Graham (1,083 points from 1965-68. With a big game this week, Fischer could move even higher into the top 30 list. At No. 29 is Jay Smith (1,096 points from 1986-87, 1988-91) and at No. 28 is Rich Andrezejewski (1,099 points from 1970-72, 1973-74). Sitting at No. 27 is Marv Rasmussen (1,102 points from 1956-59).

Going into this week, he sits at 937 career points.

Meyer’s Lipscomb Bison won an NAIA national championship in 1986. Meyer is assisted by Paul Sather (2nd year), Brad Christenson (8th year), Tom Webb (2nd year) and Arly Ohm (1st year). Justin Forde and Kyle Jordan serve as student assistants.

NEXT — Northern State takes a break for the holidays and returns to action Jan. 2 and 3 to host Moorhead State and Minnesota-Crookston.

HANSON EARNS A SPOT ON ALL-AMERICAN FARM TEAM

Dec. 13, 1999

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University senior point guard and fourth-year starter Scott Hanson was named an honorable mention selection to the 1999-2000 All-American Farm Men's Basketball Team. That announcement was made today in a press release from Dodge Truck and Successful Farming magazine.

Hanson, a first team all-conference pick last season, is also a three-time academic all-conference performer. Going into this week, the Wolves are 72-23 in games with Hanson running the show at point guard (76 percent win ratio). Hanson is a native of Tolna, N.D. He is the son of Les and Colleen Hanson.

The All-American Farm Team is a scholastic program sponsored by Dodge Truck and Successful Farming magazine, honoring outstanding collegiate athletes who call a farm or ranch home. This, the second part of the program, honors outstanding men and women student-athletes from the sports of basketball and wrestling. Similar teams are selected from the sports of football, volleyball, track, softball and baseball. The select teams are comprised of athletes from all divisions of four-year collegiate athletic sports. NSU running back Troy Hoff was named to the 1999 All-American Farm Football Team in July.

Selections to all these teams are made by a panel of judges comprised of sports writers, broadcasters, college coaches and sports information directors. MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM HOSTS MOUNT SENARIO BEFORE OPENING CONFERENCE SEASON

Dec. 5, 1999

SCHEDULE — Northern State University hosts Mount Senario (Ladysmith, Wis.) Monday, Dec. 6 before starting the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season by running the toughest weekend gauntlet the NSIC has to offer. The Wolves travel to Wayne State (Neb.) Friday, Dec. 10 and Southwest State (Marshall, Minn.) Saturday, Dec. 11. All tipoff times this week are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

RECORDS — NSU is 2-4 and 0-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Mount Senario is 6-5 overall. After both playing very competitive pre-conference schedules, Wayne and Southwest both stand at 3-2 overall.

LAST WEEK — Northern State fell at home to North Dakota 66-83 before losing on the road at South Dakota State 99-75.

SERIES –– Northern State defeated Mount Senario 97-65 at home last season. Northern holds a slight edge in its series with Wayne State 13-12. The teams have successfully defended homecourt in the home-and-home series for five straight years, ever since NSU swept Wayne during the 1993-94 season. Southwest State broke a 14-game NSU winning streak in the teams’ series last season in Marshall. NSU leads the all-time series 40-11.

LAST WEEK — Northern faced two of the better teams in the North Central Conference and North Central Region last week. Both North Dakota and South Dakota State shot at least 50 percent from the field and put together critical big runs from which the young Wolves couldn’t recover.

A highlight for NSU last week was the play of junior center Ben Dahl (Cottonwood, Minn.). Dahl equaled his career-high in scoring on both nights, scoring 18 points in each contest on a combined 14-of-22 shooting (64 percent).

ROAD RAGE — Northern is in the midst of what will be its toughest two-week string of games this season, especially on the road. After facing over 7,700 partisan fans at South Dakota State last week, NSU travels to two of the NSIC’s toughest places to play — WSC’s Rice Auditorium and Southwest State’s R/A Facility — both of which are sure to be packed and loud when the five-time defending NSIC Champs come to town.

MOUNT SENARIO SCOUT — The Fighting Saints are led by 6-5 junior guard Traimalle Bullock, who attacks the rack for 19 points and 11 rebounds per game. Three other players also average double digits in points. Senior 6-7 forward Larry Taylor nets just under 15 ppg, 6 rpg and leads the team with 16 blocked shots on the season. Other players to watch: 6-0 senior guard Shontoine Nelson (13.3 ppg, 3.6 apg) and 6-5 junior forward Darren Jeanville (11.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg).

WAYNE STATE SCOUT — After dropping its first two games of the season, Wayne State has worked out the kinks and won its last three before this week, including an 87-72 over Minnesota State-Mankato Saturday. Junior guard Brad Joens leads a balanced offensive attack in scoring with 14.4 points per game. Senior post Eric Henderson is the anchor of the team, averaging over 11 points and 11 rebounds per game while shooting over 65 percent from the field. Top reserve Nathan Mulder comes off the bench and is second on the team in points and rebounds, averaging 12 and 5.2, respectively.

SOUTHWEST STATE SCOUT — If South Dakota State is a measuring stick, the Wolves will have their hands full when they visit what has always been a raucous SSU crowd on Northern night. SDSU edged the Mustangs by a just a point in Marshall last week before dispatching the Wolves by 24 in Frost Arena later in the week. SSU is led by junior Scott Koenen, who leads the team in scoring and rebounding with over 18 points and six rebounds per game. Koenen is off to an All-American start, shooting 72 percent from the field so far. He also has a solid supporting cast, as SSU averages 86 points per game, is shooting 57 percent as a team and is outscoring opponents by 18 points per game. Three other SSU players average just over 10 points per game. Younger brother Chad Koenen is shooting 67 percent from the field. The sophomore is tied for second on the team in scoring (10.4 ppg) and rebounding (4.6 rpg).

FISCHER MOVES UP ONE — Senior guard Dan Fischer (Bagley, Minn.) hit the 1,000 career-point plateau during the first game of the season against Jamestown this year. Going into the week, Fischer rests at 1,043 career points. Last week he moved into 33rd on NSU’s all-time scoring list, passing Scott Boekehleide, who scored 1,039 points from 1991-95. Next on the list is Mike Vogel, who scored 1,075 points from 1967-70.

HANSON NEARING 1,000 — Senior point guard Scott Hanson (Tolna, N.D.) will likely break the 1,000-point career mark this season. Hanson, in his fourth year as NSU’s starting point guard, is recovering from ankle surgery and worked his way back into the starting lineup last week. Going into this week, he sits at 915 career points.
