Northern State put together its second three-game winning streak of the season Saturday night with a convincing 74-57 win over touring Minnesota State-Moorhead.
With NSU's first three-game tear coming in November, the team hopes to build on the current streak and get a head of steam going in February to end the conference season strong and enter the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament on a roll.
The Wolves (11-9, 7-5 NSIC) shot down the Dragons with a deadly perimeter attack on what was the school's annual "I Hate Winter" celebration and parent's night.. NSU's first 12 points of the game came on 3-pointers, and the team went on to shoot 12-of-22 (55 percent) from downtown. The Wolves struggled from the field inside of the arc in the first half, but their long-range touch and stifling defense saved them. Eight of NSU's 10 made shots in the first half were from 3-point range. Meanwhile, the defense allowed just 24 points in the first half and allowed the team to build a 10-point lead going into halftime.
In the second half, the Wolves methodically built on that lead. The Dragons came as close as five points midway through the second stanza, but sophomore standout Sundance Wicks (Gillette, Wyo.) ended that threat with -- not surprisingly -- a 3-pointer and the threat ended there.
Wicks led NSU with 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting to go with five assists. He was a scalding 4-of-5 from downtown. But sophomore sharpshooter Nick Schroeder (Plymouth, Minn.) even topped that long-range performance, going 5-of-6 from 3-point land to account for all of his 15 points. Junior guard Drew Gruver (Scott City, Kan.) rounded out NSU's double-digit scorers with 11 points to go with a game-high seven assists. Junior post Brad Hansen (Tea) led NSU on the boards with six rebounds to go with eight points. Joe Dykhoff led MSUM with 23 points and six rebounds.
NSU's final regular season home game is on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14,
against Minnesota-Morris. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
