Northern State's six-game winning streak was snapped Friday night in an overtime grinder as Minnesota State-Moorhead upset the North Central Region's 10th-ranked team 70-66 in NSU's Barnett Center.

Neither team played well offensively, with Northern shooting a season-low 28 percent in addition to its lowest output of points all season. Northern heaved up a school-record 38 3-pointers on the night, connecting on 12.

The Dragons (9-3, 3-1 NSIC) didn't fair much better on the offensive end, but it was enough to make the difference. MSUM shot 37 percent from the field. The Dragons took the lead with 10 minutes remaining in the second half and hung onto it until a free-throw by junior guard Nick Schroeder (Plymouth, Minn.) tied the score at 56-56 with 1:18 remaining. Each team had opportunities to end the game in regulation, but the score remained knotted at 56 heading into overtime after a last-second fade-away 3-pointer by MSUM rimmed out.

In the extra stanza, NSU went out in front first on another free-throw by Schroeder, but it would be the team's last lead. MSUM built its lead to as many as six points and made its free-throws down the stretch to ice the victory.

Junior forward Sundance Wicks (Gillette, Wyo.) scored 15 points all on 3-pointers to go with eight rebounds and four assists on the night. Schroeder was NSU's other double-digit scorer with 13 points. He also had a career-high nine rebounds. Sophomore point guard Steve Smiley (Arvada, Colo.) also led the team in rebounding, pulling down a career-high nine boards to go with seven assists. Billy Halter led MSUM with 20 points.

True freshman guard DJ Prue (Pierre) was hospitalized with an emergency appendectomy earlier this week and not able to play Friday.

With the loss, NSU dropped to 4-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play and 9-4 overall. The team will try to get back on track with a league game against Minnesota-Crookston Saturday night.
