WOLVES
CLOBBER CROOKSTON 101-70
Feb. 8, 2002
Northern State's
post play led the team to a dominating 101-70 victory over Minnesota-Crookston
Friday night in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup
in Crookston.
The Wolves
were simply too strong for Crookston inside, with senior posts
Brad Hansen (Tea) and Andy Foster (Caledonia, Minn.) combining
for 41 points and 22 rebounds from the center slot. Foster's 21
points and 12 boards led the Wolves and were career highs, while
Hansen's 20 points and 10 boards gave the the center spot a dual
double-double.
As a team,
Northern obliterated Crookston on the boards, collecting 45 rebounds
on the night to Crookston's 26. Northern's offensive rebounding
output of 23 boards gave the team a slew of second-chance points
and was the difference in the game.
Northern outscored
Crookston 51-29 in the second half and shot 60 percent for the
game. In all, five Wolves hit double digits, with senior forward
Houston Reed (Olathe, Colo.) scoring 17 points in 18 minutes,
junior forward Sundance Wicks (Gillette, Wyo.) scoring 15 points
(3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range), and junior guard Nick Schroeder
(Plymouth, Minn.) rounding out the double-digit dandies with 10
points.
UMC was led
by the league's leading scorer in Joe Hasz, who poured in 26 points.
Northern will
try to continue its dominating play Saturday night at Minnesota
State-Moorhead. The Dragons defeated NSU earlier this season in
Aberdeen.
A win at MSUM
would tie NSU coach Don Meyer for 12th on college basketball's
all-time win list. Currently holding the slot is legendary Kansas
coach Phog Allen, who racked up a 746-264 record in his 48-year
career. Meyer is now 745-253 in his 30th year of coaching.
