All
about the books
-- Northern's team poses after working to help
the 2001 AAUW book drive a success. |
The
Northern State University men's basketball program helped out
at a book drive sponsored by the local chapter of the American
Association of University Women earlier this month.
The
team collected countless books from various drop-off sites in
Aberdeen and hauled them to the Super City Mall. They also brought
about 30 tables and helped set the books up for display. When
the drive ended two days later, the team helped take down the
display.
According
to Salona Wachs, who has been involved with the group and book
drive since its inception, NSU's basketball team starting helping
out last year and has quickly become invaluable to the drive's
success.
"We
have them do all the heavy labor," Wachs said. "Honestly I don't
think we could do it anymore without them."
Proceeds
from the AAUW book drive go toward the national organization for
fellowships to help women working beyond their doctorates. Locally,
the group also sponsors two scholarships for students attending
Northern. The group has been doing the local book drive for well
over two decades. Anyone who graduates from an accredited four-year
school is eligible to belong to AAUW.
