WOLVES WIN BATTLE OF TOP NSIC TEAMS WITH 72-70 WIN OVER WINONA

Aberdeen, S.D. - Northern State rallied from nine points down with 5:58 to play to upend the Winona State Warriors on Friday night in Wachs Arena.

Northern began the game with a 10-2 lead but the tide would quickly turn as the Warriors outscored the Wolves 29-11 in the next ten minutes to claim a 31-21 advantage. Northern got back in the game but WSU held a 34-32 lead at the half.

Winona built its lead back up to 61-52 with 5:58 left but Northern came storming back with a 13-2 run to reclaim the lead 65-63 on a Jarod Obering three with 2:41 left in the game.

WSU tied the score at 65 but Obering knocked down his fourth three-pointer of the night to go with free throws from Nick Schroeder and Steve Smiley to seal the win for the Wolves.

In the game, Sundance Wicks hit for his 1,000th career point in the first half making the front end of two free throws.

Jarod Obering led the Wolves in the victory tying his career high with 21 points including 4-of-6 from downtown.

NSU's Adam Grant added 14 points and seven rebounds while Wicks threw in ten points and eight boards.

Steve Smiley recorded a game high seven assists for the Wolves on the evening.

Winona State's David Zellmann went off for a game high 29 in a losing effort. He also led his team with eight rebounds on the night.

With the win, Northern State (11-7, 8-2 NSIC) keeps pace with Southwest State who earned an overtime win at Bemidji State on Friday.

Northern hosts Concordia-St. Paul Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
