Stampede Past Mustangs
January
31, 2004
MARSHALL,
MN - The Wolves defeated the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State
on Saturday night. The contest started with a frantic pace that
seemed like it would never end. The Wolves jumped out to a quick
lead with Jared Obering's quick three pointer to start the game.
The
two teams would trade hoops before the Mustangs would take their
first, and only, lead of the game at 16:29 on a 3-pointer by SMSU's
Freshman point guard Sam Weiner. The Wolves would respond with
a steal and lay-up by NSU's Steve Smiley and would take a 11-10
lead. The Wolves would not look back as they would hold the lead
for the remainder of game.
NSU
was led by Sophomore Matt Hammer who scored 18 points and grabbed
seven rebounds. This marks the fourth straight game where Hammer
was Northern's leading scorer. In addition to Hammer's strong
play, the Wolves also received strong performances by Jared Obering
(14 points), Adam Grant (11 points), and Steve Smiley (eight assists).
Northern
successfully held SMSU's top scoring threats contained. Forward
Elijah Starzl was held to only 12 points on 6-14 shooting. Senior
guard Rory Larson was limited to 2-10 shooting putting in for
only six points.
The
Wolves have now rattled off eight straight wins and have swept
the Wayne State/SW Minnesota State road trip for the past three
seasons. With the weekend sweep, the Wolves now move to 15-5 overall
and are 7-2 in NSIC action.
Northern
will be back in action on Tuesday night in Crookston, MN. Tip-off
time is 6:00 pm.
