#19 Northern State used a 16-2 run midway through the second half to pull away and hand #6 Sioux Falls (NAIA) their first setback of the season, 71-57. The Wolves improve to 2-0 on the season while the Cougars fall to 4-1. NSU Head Coach Don Meyer crept one step closer to 800 wins; he now stands at 795 in his career.
The Wolves opened up on a 7-0 run three minutes into the game and held it throughout the rest of the first half as they hit the locker room up seven, 32-25. The Wolves shot 40% (12-30) in the first half, including 5 of 15 from downtown. The Cougars were 37% (10-27) but only 2-9 from beyond the arc.
The first nine minutes of the second half remained much like the first half, the Wolves holding on to a five to eight point lead. Then with 11:16 remaining in the game and the score 46-40, the Wolves went on a 16-2 run putting them up twenty, 62-42. Five different Wolves scored in the run.
Leading the Wolves was Matt Hammer (Jr., G/F, Elkton, S.D.) with a game high 21 points on 9 of 17 shooting. He also grabbed six boards, handed out five assists and had two steals in the game. Jarod Obering (Sr., G, Beatrice, Neb.) was second in scoring with 13 points on 5-12 shooting, including 3 of 8 from three-point range. DustinHjelmeland (Sr., F, Staple, Minn.) and BjoernSchoo (Jr., C, Bad Saeckiugeu, Germany) were the other Wolves in double-figures with 11 points each. Schoo had a game high eight rebounds in his 21 minutes.
The Wolves bench outscored the Cougars 24 to 11 in the game.
The Wolves shot 45.2% (28-62) in the game compared to 33.3% (19-57) for the Cougars. The Cougars did out rebound the Wolves in the game 39 to 35. Both teams missed only one from the charity stripe (NSU 7-8, USF 14-15).
