Marshall, Minn. – Matt Hammer scored a season high 28 points as #16 Northern State (5-0) downs NCAA Division I North Dakota State (0-3) 79-72 on day one of the Southwest Minnesota State / Bancorp Classic. Northern State Head Coach Don Meyer has now won career game number 798, leaving him just two wins shy of 800.
Matt Hammer (Jr., G/F, Elkton, N.D.) tied a career high in field goals made as he hit 11 of his 15 shot attempts on his way to scoring 28 points. Hammer did hit a career high in three pointers, as he was 4 of 7 from beyond the arc.
The Wolves found themselves down at the half for the first time this season, 33-31. The Bison went on a 11-2 run late in the first half to put them up 33-26, before the Wolves closed the half on a 5-0 run of their own.
The game had 15 lead changes, until at the 13:15 mark of the second half Aaron Busack (Jr., C, Redwood Falls, Minn.) hit a free throw to put the Wolves up for good. From that point the Wolves went on a 17-5 run to put them up 12 with 7:35 to go.
The Wolves were out-rebound for the second time in five games this season, but scored 26 points off 15 Bison turnovers.
Craig Nelson (R-Fr., G, Mayville, N.D.) scored a career high 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting in his 30 minutes of play. Busack was the only other Wolf in double figures as he dropped in ten, and grabbed a season high eight rebounds.
