Aberdeen, S.D. – Northern State blew past Minnesota Duluth 69-50 as Head Coach Don Meyer picks up career victory number 800 in front of over 5,000 fans at Barnett Center. The sketch of Meyer in the photo above was drawn by NSU student Ben Victor, and given to Coach Meyer after he won his 800th game.
The Wolves opened up a 41-25 first half lead with hot shooting all around. They hit 16-30 shots, including six of 12 from three-point range. The Bulldogs hit only 29.6% (8-27) of their shots, including a lowly two of eight from downtown. The Wolves owned the boards with 21 compared to 15 by the Bulldogs. The Wolves used 12 second chance points and 14 points in the paint to open the lead.
The second half saw the teams only combine for 53 points as the Wolves cruised to the 19-point victory. The crowd of 5,437 is the ninth largest crowd at the Barnett Center since 1998.
Matt Hammer (Jr., F, Elkton, S.D.) led all scorers with his 19 points on 7-17 shooting. Hammer was just two rebounds shy of his third double-double in three games. Aaron Busack (Jr., C, Redwood Falls, Minn.) and Jarod Obering (Sr., G, Beatrice, Neb.) both added nine for the Wolves, with Busack grabbing seven boards.
Matt Hammer has been named the NSIC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Hammer (Jr., F, Elkton, S.D.) scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to record his second double-double in as many games as the Wolves downed Augustana 83-74. Hammer backed that up with a 19 point performance in the Wolves 69-50 win over Minnesota Duluth giving Northern State Head Coach Don Meyer his 800th career victory. This marks the second time this season, and third time in his career that Hammer has been named player of the week.
Hammer is averaging 18.4 points per game, 6.7 rebounds a game and 2.1 steals per game to lead the Wolves in those categories. Hammer was a 2003-04 NSIC All-Conference selection and a member of the 2004 NSIC All-Tournament Team. Hammer has scored 773 points (11.0 ppg) thus far in his career at Northern leaving him just 227 from 1,000 in his career.
