Hammer Hits Winner With 2 Seconds to Go

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Northern State’s Matt Hammer hit a jumper from the free throw line with two second to go to propel the Wolves to a 68-66 road win over MSU Moorhead. Hammer finished the game with 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists as the Wolves remain atop of the NSIC with a 6-1 record (14-4 overall). The Dragons fall to 6-13 overall and 1-6 in the NSIC.

Aaron Busack (Jr., C, Redwood Falls, Minn.) had nine early points before the Dragons switched to a zone defense (Busack finished with 19). From there the Wolves had to rely on outside shooting. DustinHjelmeland (Sr., F, Staples. Minn.) shot a career high 16 three pointers in the game, connecting on only five, but his last one with 3:47 left put the Wolves on top by two until the Dragons ties the game at 66 with 15 seconds left. From there, Hammer (Jr., G/F, Elkton, S.D.) took the ball at the top right of the key, drove to the middle of the lane and pulled up to hit the game winner from just behind the free throw line. The Dragons did have a chance at the end, but could not handle in inbounds pass.

The Wolves were out rebounded in the game 30-20 in the game, and an amazing 12-5 in the first half, but hit 82% (18-22) of their free throws. They also had only 11 turnovers compared to 17 by the Dragons.

Hjelmeland’s 16 three points were not close to the Wolves record for three-pointers attempted in the game. Eric Kline attempted 23 threes back on March 12, 1993 against Albertson.

The Wolves take on NDSU on Tuesday night in Fargo before returning home to take on the Dragons again on Saturday, February 5th at 8:00 p.m.
