Hammer Surpasses 1,000 in Loss to Winona State

WINONA, Minn. - Northern State was handed their second NSIC loss of the season to Winona State in a 96-74 routing. Winona State now pulls in a second place tie with the Wolves, holding the tiebreaker with the season sweep. Northern State’s Matt Hammer surpassed 1,000 points in his career as the scored 16 points in the loss. The Wolves are now 17-6, 8-2 in the NSIC while the Warriors are 17-9, 8-2 in the NSIC.

Winona State scored over 50 points in the second half as they hand the Wolves their worse NSIC loss of the season. The Warriors hopped out to an early lead and never looked back in the win. Matt Hammer (Jr., G/F, Elkton, S.D.) hit a three pointer with 2:27 left in the game to surpass 1,000 points in his career. Hammer is the third Wolf this season to surpass the 1,000 point make, as he joins Aaron Busack (Jr., C, Redwood Falls, Minn.) and Jarod Obering (Sr., G, Beatrice, Neb.).

Busack added 16 points of his own in the game, while Obering dropped in 12. Dustin Hjelmeland (Sr., F, Staples, Minn.) had 11 points. The Wolves were out rebounded in the game 43-29 and send Winona State to the free throw line 35 times (WSU 27-35 from the line).

The Wolves have a pivotal game on Friday, February 18 th when they host first place Bemidji State (9-1) at Barnett Center. The Wolves handed the Beavers’ their only loss so far this season in overtime in Bemidji. Winona State travels to Southwest Minnesota State and Wayne State next weekend and finishes the season hosting Minnesota, Crookston and Bemidji State.
