Hammer Scored 30 in Win Over SW Minnesota State

Marshall, Minn. – Matt Hammer scored a game high 30 points, including 17 in the second half as #21 Northern State (12-1, 2-0 NSIC) pulled out a 81-77 road win over SW Minnesota State (7-6, 0-2 NSIC) on the second night of NSIC play.

Hammer (Sr., F, Elkton, S.D.) was unstoppable in the second half as he was able to drive to the basket, score and pick up the foul multiple times. Hammer finished the night 13 of 21 from the field and 3 of 5 from the free throw line.

Kevin Ratzsch (R-Fr., F, Bloomington, Ill.) played a very solid game as he tied his career high with ten points in the game, although he missed three free throws late in the game.

The first half saw the Wolves lead by as many as seven a couple of times, but the Mustangs were able to knot the game at 40 at the half. The Mustangs took advantage of an 18-11 rebounding advantage in which eight were on the offensive end.

The Mustangs scored the first five points of the second half and held on to the lead until midway through the half when the Wolves were able to chip their way into the lead. The Wolves took advantage of some careless turnovers and missed free throws to open up a small lead that they were able to hold on to down the stretch.

The Wolves had the chance to close the game out with a couple of minutes to go but they struggled from the line on the night as they 2 of 8 on free-throws down the stretch and finished the game 11 of 24 (46%) from the line.

Both teams shot very well from the field as the Wolves finished shooting 55% (32-58) while the Mustangs were 30 of 59 for 50.8%. The Wolves were out rebounded in the game 36 to 31 and 12 to 8 on the offensive end. The Wolves also ran the court well as they scored 15 points on the fast break.

The Wolves return home to host Minnesota, Crookston on Friday, Jan. 13 th at 8:00 p.m. at Barnett Center before hosting Bemidji State on Saturday, Jan. 14 th at 8:00 p.m.
