St. Paul, Minn. – #5 Northern State (15-2, 5-1 NSIC) won an ugly one at Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul 77-70 over Concordia St. Paul (12-6, 2-4 NSIC). Both teams were horrid from the free throw line as the Wolves were 15 of 26 (57.7%) while the Golden Bears were 7 of 20 (35%) including missing several front ends of one and one.
The Wolves held a 15 point first half lead before the Golden Bears spurted to a 37-36 halftime lead. Neither team could take control until Northern State finally worked their way to a six point lead at 62-56 with 5:28 in the game. The Golden Bears would tie the game back up at 67 with 1:43 to go, but a quick lay-up and foul by Matt Hammer put the Wolves back up by three.
The Golden Bears answered with another three with 1:24 to go, but once again the Wolves answered with a three pointer by Craig Nelson, his only three of the night. The Wolves would force a Golden Bear turnover and added a jumper by Kyle Schwan (R-So., G, Aberdeen, S.D.) and a late break away dunk by Hammer to seal the deal.
Both teams turned the ball over a lot as Northern State had 20 and the Golden Bears 16. The Golden Bears had 23 points off turnover while the Wolves had 18.
The game held eight lead changes and seven ties throughout.
The Wolves out rebounded the Golden Bears 38 to 31, but lost the offensive battle 15 to 11.
Both teams shot well from the field as the Wolves were 29 of 49 (59.2%) while CSP was 28 of 61 (45.9%). The Wolves were 4 of 9 from three-point range while the Golden Bears were 7 of 23 (30.4%).
Leading scorer for the Wolves was Matt Hammer (Sr., F, Elkton, S.D.) with 20 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Hammer added eight rebounds, five assists and three steals in the game. Adam Grant (Sr., F, Berthold, N.D.) had a solid game as he scored 14 points on 5 of 7 shooting while Bjoern Schoo (Sr., C, Germany) was 5 of 6 for 12 points. CraigNelson (R-So., G, Mayville, N.D.) hit a late three pointer and ended the game with 10 points in his 24 minutes of play
