Adam Grant Scores Game High 18 Points in 73-51 Win over Wayne State
Aberdeen, S.D. – No. 20 Northern State (23-4, 11-3 NSIC) jumped out to a 19-1 lead on their way to a 73-51 win over Wayne State (8-16, 6-8 NSIC) on Parent’s/Senior Night at Barnett Center. It was also “I Hate Winter” night in Wachs Arena, which was packed with 6,432 fans.
It was senior night for the Wolves and the seniors played a large roll in the Wolves win. Adam Grant (Sr., F, Berthold, N.D.) had a game high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting. He also had seven boards in his 21 minutes. Matt Hammer (Sr., F, Elkton, S.D.) had another all-around good game as he scored 16, had seven assists, six rebounds and four steals in his 28 minutes of play. Aaron Busack (Sr., C, Redwood Falls, Minn.) scored 12 and grabbed nine rebounds on the night.
The Wolves opened the game on a 19-1 run as the Wildcats came out ice cold. The Wildcats started the game off 0-11 and did not make their first field goal until 9:30 left in the first half. Wayne State battled back to close the gap to as close as six, with 7:06 to go. With the score 26-20 the Wolves finished the first half on a 13-5 run to open the margin to 14, 39-25 at the break.
The Wolves would to continue to extend their lead in the second half and win easily by 22.
The Wildcats managed to finish the first half shooting 7-of-26 (26%) and 16-of-51 (31%) for the game. The Wolves were 14-of-24 (58%) from the field in the first half and 26-of-48 (54%) in the game.
For the game there were 49 fouls called, 28 on the Wildcats. The Wolves were 18-of-29 (62%) from the line while the Wildcats were 13-of-24 (54%).
Northern State will host a first round game in the NSIC/Red Baron Basketball Classic on Wednesday, March 1st at 8:00 p.m. Their opponent will be determined tomorrow after the Concordia St. Paul at Bemidji State game (4:00 p.m.). The Wolves will be the #2 seed after finishing second in the NSIC behind Winona State.
