Northern State Remains at #3 in North Central Region for Sixth Straight Week
INDIANAPOLIS - Northern State remained at #3 in the seventh North Central Regional Ranking of 2006. The Wolves are currently 23-4 overall and 11-3 in the NSIC. Regionally the Wolves are 17-4 as they enter the first round of NSIC/Red Baron Men's Basketball Classic tonight.
The only change in this week's poll was #5 St. Cloud State dropped to #8 with the #6, #7, #8 teams sliding up a spot. Nebraska-Kearney moved up a spot to #5 with the St. Cloud loss and with their win over #1 Fort Hays State last Sunday night.
Eight teams from the region will qualify for the national tournament, with automatic bids granted to the post-season tournament champions of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, the North Central Conference, and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Of the 10 teams listed in the poll, two are NSIC schools (#2 Winona State and #3 Northern State). The RMAC boasts the most schools in the poll with five (#1 Fort Hays State, #5 Nebraska-Kearney, #6 Fort Lewis, #7 Metropolitan State and #9 Mesa State), while the NCC has three schools (#4 Minnesota State, #8 St. Cloud State and #10 South Dakota).
Northern State is currently ranked #14 in the NABC/DII Coaches Poll, which has no bearing on post-season play. The Wolves will host Concordia St. Paul in the first round game in the 2006 NSIC/Red Baron Basketball Classic on Wednesday, March 1st at 8:00 p.m. in the Barnett Center.
