Wolves Hold on in Overtime to Defeat North Dakota 88-84

GRAND FORKS, N.D.- The Wolves got seven points from Levi Hamilton and four clutch free throws from Craig Nelson in the overtime to help the Wolves escape Grand Forks, N.D. with the 88-84 overtime win. With the win the Wolves improve their record to 4-0 on the season and with the loss the University of North Dakota fell to 1-3.
The Wolves came out slow against the Fighting Sioux by getting down by a score of 18-8 in the first seven minutes of the game. But two three pointers by Luke Wicks and one by Levi Hamiltion pulled the wolves back within one at 18-17. The Wolves were able to get their first lead of the game when Brett Newton hit a three point shot at the 7:47 mark. The Wolves were able to build their lead up to as many as four points in the first half, but only found themselves up by one 41-40 at halftime.
In first half the Wolves were led by Luke Wicks as he hit 3 shots from behind the arc to give him 9 points. Kevin Ratzsch continued where he left off against Augustana as he poured in eight points for the Wolves in the half.
Both team shot the ball well from the field as the Wolves hit 55.2% (16-29). and the Fighting Sioux hit 68.2% (15/22) in the first half. Both teams also shot well from behind the arc as the Wolves went 9 of 14 and the Fighting Sioux went 4 of 6.
In the second half the Wolves went up by as many as seven points but the Fighting Sioux battled back and took the lead with just over 3:00 minutes left in the game 72-71. The Wolves made the next four points off of a basket and a free throw from Levi Hamilton. But with just eleven seconds to go in the game the games leading scorer Emanual Little put in a layup to tie the game at 74-74. The Wolves had enough time to get the last shot but Ratzsch's runner in the lane came up short and the game was headed for overtime.
In the overtime period the Wolves outscored the Fighting Sioux 14-10. Half of the Wolves points came from Levi Hamilton who finished the game with 20 points off of 8 of 14 shooting.
Kevin Ratzsch finished the game with 20 points as well as he went 8 of 16 from the field. Luke Wicks and Craig Nelson were the other Wolves players who finished in double figures as Wicks had 15 points and Neslon added 10.
The Fighting Sioux were led by Emmanuel Little who had 22 points off of 7 of 10 shooting. He also snared 12 rebounds in the game. Ervin Youmans also had a big night as he poured in 18 points off of 7 of 13 shooting.
In the game the Wolves were outrebounded 28-25, but were able to force 20 Sioux turnovers to their nine. The Wolves were outshot 55.2% (32/58) in the game to the Sioux 56.9% (29/51) but went 4 of 4 in overtime to the Sioux's 4 of 10.
The Wolves will be in action again on November 24th when they face #18 Northwest Missouri State in the Super 8/Bob Wachs classic held in Aberdeen, S.D. The game is set to begin at 8:00 pm.
