WOLVES ROLL TO 81-60 WIN OVER MSU MOORHEAD

January 5, 2007
MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Northern State men’s basketball team improved to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC with an 81-60 win over MSU Moorhead (6-6, 2-2 NSIC) Friday night. The Wolves had three players score 17 or more points as the team shot a red hot and season high 63.0% from the field.

The Wolves took control of the game early on, finding success from anywhere on the field, but especially from beyond the arc. Luke Wicks and Kevin Ratzsch combined for 5-of-7 three-pointers as Northern shot 60% (6-10) from long range in the first half. The Wolves led 44-29 at the intermission.

Northern’s offensive success continued in the second half as the team connected on 13-of-19 (68.4%) shots from the field to set the game average at 63.0%. MSU Moorhead, who shot 54.2% in the first half, cooled to just 36.0% in the second half for a 44.9% (22-49) game total. Northern nabbed 28 rebounds to MSUM’s 23. The Dragons’ six point run to start the second half brought them to within nine points of NSU, the closest they would get in the game.

Luke Wicks had a career night as he propelled the Wolves with 21 points from 8-of-9 shooting. He could not be stopped from long range, swishing in 5-of-6 three-pointers. Ratzch led the Wolves on the night with seven rebounds and had 20 points (8-13). Craig Nelson rounded out the double figure scoring with 17 points, including a perfect night at the charity strip (8-8).

The Dragons were led by Jamal O’Neal with 13 points, followed by Lee Isaacson with 11 points and a team high nine rebounds.

Northern State will wrap up this weekend’s road trip with a game at Concordia-St. Paul tomorrow night.
