Wolves Win Third in a Row

ABERDEEN, S.D. - Kevin Ratzsch led the Wolves to their third conference victory in a row as he scored 24 points and snared 5 rebounds in the 75-69 defeat of the Dragons. With the win, Northern State improves their record to 17-7 on the year and 10-5 in the NSIC. MSU Moorhead falls to 12-11 overall and 7-7 in the NSIC.
Despite holding the second leading scorer in the conference, Blake Strouth, to just six points in the first half, the Wolves only managed a 36-30 lead into halftime. They led by as many as nine points at 29-20 with 7:00 minutes left in the half, but the Dragons would go on a 10-7 run to cut into the Wolves' lead.
In the second half, the Wolves were able to play the Dragons evenly with 39 points a piece to secure the six point victory. The Wolves opened the half with a 21-10 run to open up a 17 point lead at 57-40 with 10:33 left in the game. The rest of the way, the Dragons would outscore the Wolves 29-18, but there was not enough time to complete the come back.
Kevin Ratzsch tallied 24 points on the night after shooting 8-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. He was 4-of-4 from the stripe. The Wolves had two other players in double figures besides Ratzsch in the game. Craig Nelson scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting and Dan DeWitt added 11 points. DeWitt also had 4 assists in the game and went 4-of-5 from the free throw line.
The Dragons had five players in double figures in the game. Lee Isaacson had 15 points and snared 8 boards, Jamal O'Neal had 12 points and 6 rebounds, Blake Strouth had 12 points, Craig Williams had 11 points and Matt Aakre had 10 points for the Dragons.
The Wolves shot 53.3% (24/45) from the field while the Dragons only shot 41.8% (23/55). The Wolves also out-shot the Dragons from behind the arc as they shot 56.3% (9/16) to the Dragons' 21.7% (5/23). The Dragons did out-rebound the Wolves by 9, but the Wolves had 15 assists to the Dragons' 8. The Dragons dominated the points in the paint as they had 34 to the Wolves' 18.
The Wolves will be in action again next weekend when they travel to Bemidji, Minn. to take on the Bemidji State Beavers on February 16th at 8:00 pm.
