ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State's Mitch Boeck, a native of Arlington, SD, was recently awarded the 2006 South Dakota Sportwriters Association High School Male Athlete of the Year award. Boeck, currently a freshman at Northern State, was presented with the award last Monday at Arlington High School.

While attending Arlington High School, Mitch excelled in four sports, football, track, golf, and most notably, basketball. He accumulated 16 athletic letters during his time at AHS and his list of accomplishments takes up the good portion of a page. In basketball, Boeck was a three-time All-Conference (DVC) honoree, was named DVC MVP, All-State, and a Mr. Basketball finalist. He averaged more than four assists and 20 points per game as a senior while shooting 55.7 percent from the field.

Boeck has also flourished in academics, which comes as no surprise as he is the son of two teachers. In high school, Mitch was named Academic All-State in football and basketball, he was an honor student and a Regent Scholar, and he received the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence.

Now in his freshman year at Northern State, Mitch has shown the poise to become a great collegiate player. He has worked his way into a starting position for the Wolves, who are currently 13-5 overall on the season and 6-3 in the Northern Sun Conference. He is averaging 5.3 points and 2.5 rebounds per game and is shooting 48.1 percent from the field.
