BOLIVAR , Mo. - Northern State's softball team dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Southwest Baptist College on Wednesday, losing 5-4 in the opening game and 8-0 in the nightcap.

Southwest Baptist put the Wolves in a hole early in the opener, scoring four first-inning runs. Northern was able to slice into the margin with three runs in the second inning.

The score remained the same until the Wolves tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh inning on Natalie Kieff's RBI single that scored Alecia Stark. A Southwest Baptist batter hit a line drive over Northern's second baseman to score the winning run with one out in the bottom of the inning.

"We played really well. This was only our third game outside, so I was nervous about how we'd respond," said NSU coach Terri Holmes. "It was really a moral victory for us. We had a lot of early-season mistakes."

The Wolves collected 10 hits in the contest, led by Kieff, Laura Donley and Stark with two each. Donley, who had a solo home run in her first collegiate at-bat, Kieff and Jenna Drey each drove in a run for NSU. Christi Schulte went the distance on the mound, allowing three earned runs and striking out five.

Southwest Baptist pitcher Laura Teschner limited the Wolves to just two hits as her team blanked Northern in the second game. Lisa Koehler and Drey had the lone hits for Northern State. Southwest Baptist scored twice in both the second and third innings and tacked on four more in the fourth before the game was ended after five innings.

"We didn't adjust to their pitcher," said Holmes. "We made some mental mistakes and got caught just standing and watching a lot with players out of position."
