ABERDEEN, S.D. -Northern State softball picked up their first win of the season after a doubleheader split with Jamestown College on Wednesday afternoon. The Wolves lost game one 0-2, but rebounded to win the nightcap 5-3. The Wolves are now 1-9 on the season, while Jamestown is 6-7.
In game one Lisa Koehler pitched a three hitter, but gave up an inside the park homerun in the top of the third inning that scored the only two runs of the game. For the game Koehler pitched seven innings giving up two runs and two hits. She struck out seven and walked only three of the 27 batters she faced. Jamestown’s pitcher Natasha Kraemer had a solid game on rubber for the Jimmies. In seven innings she gave up only two hits and struck out three of the 23 batters she faced.
Game two saw a lot more offense as the two teams combined for 18 hits (nine each). The Wolves took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Emily Howlett doubled to center, scoring Tara Schumacher. Laura Donley later singled to left to knock in Howlett.
The Wolves lead did not last long as Jamestown countered with three runs on two hits and a Northern error, to go up 3-2 after an inning and a half.
Northern knotted the game at three in the bottom of the third after Howlett singled to center and advanced to second and third on misplays by the Jimmies. Donley later flew out to center, scoring Howlett on the sac fly.
After a scoreless fourth and fith, the Wolves took advantage of a Jamestown error to put runners on first and second with no outs. Jenna Drey laid down a perfect bunt and beat the throw to load the bases. Angie Olson then smoked a single off the shortstops glove to put the Wolves up a run. Audrey Decker singled down the left field line later in the inning, scoring Drey to end the scoring at 5-3.
In the top of the seventh Jamestown threatened with runners on first and second with no outs, but after snagging a liner at short, Olson doubled up the runner on first for the second out of the inning. Decker got the final Jimmie batter to fly out to left field securing the Wolves first win of the season.
Decker finished the game on the rubber giving up two earned runs on nine hits. She walked four, struck our three and hit one batter in her seven innings of work.
