Wolves use the Long Ball to Sweep the Trojans

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State Wolves (14-28, 3-11 NSIC) hit five homeruns on the day to sweep the Dakota State Trojans (20-24, 3-9 DAC-10) in Aberdeen, S.D. The Wolves beat the Trojans 10-1 in the first game and 10-4 in the second game.

Game 1

The first game was a pitching dual until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Wolves exploded for eight runs. The Wolves used a pair of two run homeruns in the fifth inning one by Jenna Drey (Jr., CF, Burke, S.D.) and one Caitlin Hodges (Jr, OF, Hartford, S.D.) to extend the led to 10-1 and put the mercy rule in effect.

Hodges led the way offensively as she went 2 for 3 with three RBI’s and a run scored. Heather Olson (Fr., 3B, Rosemount, Minn.) also went 2 for 3 to help the Wolves to the win.

Lisa Koehler (Sr., P., Waconia, Minn.) went all five innings for the Wolves giving up six hits, one earned run and striking out three in the game. Koehler improves her overall record to 8-11 on the year.

Game 2  

In game two each team scored four runs in the first two innings, but that was all Dakota State would get as the Wolves pulled away with one run in the third inning and five in the sixth for the 10-4 win.

The Wolves got three homeruns in the game one each by Luciola Figueroa (Sr., C., Puerto Rico), Jenna Drey (Jr., CF, Burke, S.D.), and Zomarie Lozano (Jr., SS., Juncos, PR). Lozano went 4 for 4 in the game with three RBI’s and two runs scored. Drey went 3 for 4 with two RBI’s and two runs in the game.

Christi Schulte (Jr., P., Sioux Falls, S.D.) went all seven innings giving up six hits, two earned runs, while striking out eight. Schulte improved her record to 3-12 with the win.

The Wolves will be in action on Thursday April 27 th when they travel to Moorhead, Minn. to take on the Dragons of Moorhead State. Game times are set for 3:00 and 5:00 pm.
