Errors Plague Wolves

February 18, 2007
ST. CLOUD Minn. – The Northern State sluggers (0-4) mounted an impressive late-game comeback against South Dakota (2-1) on Saturday afternoon before dropping a 7-5 decision in the final day of action at the Husky Dome Classic. Later in the day, Concordia-St. Paul (2-2) took advantage of NSU errors to mark seven unearned runs in a 10-2 win. The Wolves will return to action over spring break in a trip to Orlando, FL March 4-10.

The Wolves were in a deep hole following a five-run second inning that put the Coyotes up 6-0, but a sixth inning rally made the game interesting. Errors once again plagued the Wolves, as all five USD runs in the second inning were unearned due to three NSU errors. It wasn’t until the fourth inning that NSU got their first hit, a single by Nicole Janssen. Janssen came around to score in the inning with the help of a Courtney Halsey sacrifice and a USD error.

The big inning for NSU was the sixth, when the team came up with five hits and a walk on their way to four runs. The bases filled with no outs after Tara Bruns walked, Janssen singled, and Halsey was hit by a pitch. Four hits and an infield ground ball later, the Wolves had tightened the score to 7-5 in favor of USD. Unfortunately for Northern State, they would not be able to close the gap before the game ended.

First baseman Janssen (0-1) finished the game with two hits and two runs scored while center fielder Jenna Drey had two of the team’s five RBI. Hilary Smith took the loss after giving up one hit in the first inning. Christi Schulte pitched five innings, giving up five hits and one earned run, but striking out eight.

For the Coyotes, Donohue had three RBI while three other players marked two hits each. South Dakota finished the game even with Northern at six hit each, but USD committed only one fielding error.

The Wolves went up 2-0 over Concordia-St. Paul in the final game of the weekend before their defensive struggles once again caught up with them in the third inning. Two errors put on Golden Bears base runners and a single quickly drove in both runs. A triple gave CSP their third unearned run of the inning and all the lead they would need to seal the win. The Wolves placed three base runners of their own in the following five innings, but all three went stranded and NSU failed to score any more runs. Seven of CSP’s ten runs were unearned and the Bears out-hit NSU 14-5 in the game.

Janssen once again led the Wolves in hits with two in the game and also scored once and drove in a run. NSU’s second RBI went to Heather Olson. Christi Schulte (0-2) was in the circle for 4.2 innings, striking out four batters while allowing 11 hits and an earned run.

Bergdall led the Bears with four hits and four RBI, followed by M. Olson with three RBI. Kaminski earned the win after giving up five hits and one earned run in seven innings.
