ST. PAUL, Minn. – Caitlin Hodges knocked out Northern State's only run of the game against Wayne State as the Wolves dropped their final game of the NSIC Crossover by a score of 10-1. The softball team was shutout by Southwest Minnesota State in a game played this morning in St. Paul, MN. The losses drop the Wolves to 2-27 on the season and 0-5 in NSIC play while SMSU improves to 16-6 and 4-0 in the conference and Wayne State improves to 21-8 and 5-2 NSIC.
Hodges drilled the ball over the right center fence in the second inning of the matchup with Wayne State Tuesday afternoon. It was one of three NSU hits and the only run to score in the game. Nicole Janssen and Heather Olson collected NSU's other hits, both of which were singles. The Wildcats dropped down 12 hits including five that went for extra bases. A three-run homer went to Breann Parks in the second inning, putting Wayne State up 6-1. WSC's lead increased to 10-1 in the third inning as four more runs crossed, including two more driven in by Parks from a double. Christi Schulte took the loss after pitching four innings while Wayne's Hain gained the win after allowing just one earned run.
Earlier in the day, the Wolves were kept to just two hits by Mustang pitcher Amanda Johnson, who leads the league in ERA. A single by Nicole Janssen and a double by Sara Lipetzky, as well as one walk and an SMSU error gave the Wolves four baserunners in the game. The Mustangs totaled 13 hits and scored in each inning at bat. A three-run dinger in the third inning gave the Mustangs a 10-0 lead. The knock came off of the bat of SMSU's Dickhausen, who went 3-for-3 in the game with four RBI and three runs scored. SMSU won the game by a final score of 11-0. Audrey Decker struck out two batters in 2.1 innings, although Johnson's nine strikeout performance resulted in the win for the Mustangs.
The Wolves will travel to Bismarck, ND on April 14th for a rescheduled doubleheader against U-Mary. They will then face MSU Moorhead on the 17th and UM-Crookston on the 18th. Both doubleheaders are on the road.
