ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Wolves' softball team (6-34) split a doubleheader with the Bemidji State Beavers (7-21) Monday afternoon at the Moccasin Creek Complex, keeping the teams equal in the NSIC standings with records of 4-12. The Wolves played an all around strong game in a 6-3 game one win, but struggled defensively in the second game, giving up a 13-5 decision. BSU's Docken hit a three-run homer in the first inning of each game.

GAME 1
Bemidji State took a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer by Docken in the first inning. It would be the last time the Beavers would cross the plate in the game as reigning NSIC Pitcher of the Week Christi Schulte kept the hitters in check and off the bases. Offensively, the Wolves started out strong, took back the lead, and never looked back. Leadoff hitter Jenna Drey knocked a triple into right center field and scored from a Sara Lipetzky single in the next at-bat. The team added four more runs on in the second after starting the inning with four straight hits. Schulte led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She was driven in by a Nicole Janssen single. Francis, Correll, and Drey each added runs with two RBI going to Hilary Smith and another going to Lipetzky. An unearned Olson run in the fifth brought the final score to 6-3.

The Wolves had a slight hitting edge over the Beavers in game one, notching ten hits to BSU’s nine. Northern had four players with two hits each, led by Smith who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Janssen who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Christi Schulte gained her fifth win of the season after striking out three batters and giving up the three earned runs. She pitched six scoreless innings. Bemidji’s RBI all went to Docken in her only hit of the game. Johnson had a 2-for-3 performance with one run scored.

GAME 2
Bemidji State jumped out in front of NSU 3-0 once again in the first inning of the second game, but were silenced for two innings as the Wolves made some great fielding plays. BSU drove in a combined ten runs in the fourth and fifth innings as the Wolves began to fall apart in the field. The Beavers found holes in the defense and also used three NSU errors to their advantage.

After finally getting out of the long fifth inning, Northern showed tenacity at the plate and an unwillingness to give up as they batted around the order and notched five runs in the bottom of the inning. NSU started the inning with a hit batter and two singles before Sam Francis knocked in two runs with a drill to the shortstop the momentum continued to build with another single and a sac fly by Drey, as well as a single RBI by Lipetzky. Smith stepped up to drive in the final run of the inning with the team's second sac fly.

The Wolves did not record a single strikeout in the game but came up with just six hits, two of which went to Lipetzky. Francis led the team with her two RBI and Audrey Decker took the loss after four innings pitched. The Wolves will return to action at home on Thursday against the University of Mary, 3:00 and 5:00 pm.
