ABERDEEN, SD. – The Wolves (4-31, 2-9 NSIC) started play at the NSIC Crossover with a thrilling game against Concordia-St. Paul (19-21, 5-3 NSIC), pushing the Golden Bears into nine innings of play before giving up the 6-4 loss. They came up short in a 4-1 loss to Upper Iowa (12-24, 5-6 NSIC) in a 4:00 pm game. The Wolves' final game of Saturday was halted in the fifth inning due to lightning.
GAME 1
Christi Schulte threw a great game from the mound in Saturday's opening game against Concordia-St. Paul. She did not give up an earned run in nine innings of work and fanned six batters, giving the Wolves an opportunity to claim the win. CSP scored three unearned runs in the top of the first inning, only to be answered by three NSU runs in the bottom of the inning to knot the game up at 3-3. Northern claimed the lead in the fourth inning after stringing together several hits and took a 4-3 lead. The Wolves still had the lead with two outs in the seventh inning, but a late rally by CSP sent the game into extra innings. The Golden Bears secured the win in the ninth as two runners came around to score as a result of an NSU error.
Northern State led in the hit column, coming up with 11 hits to CSP's eight. Hilary Smith led the Wolves with three hits, including a double that drove in two runs in the first inning. Jenna Drey and Sara Lipetzky each had two hit outings, with Lipetzky giving the Wolves the go-ahead run in the fourth after singling down the right field line. Caitlin Hodges marked NSU's other RBI in the game. Schulte pitched a trio of three up, three down innings and gave up just one extra base hit. Gaining the win for the Golden Bears was Turba, who struck out six batters in five innings of relief work.
GAME 2
Northern could not get their bats going against the Peacocks of Upper Iowa. They tallied just four hits in the game, one in each of the first three innings and one in the seventh. Upper Iowa scored enough runs to win the game in their first four at-bats, with a lead-off single and a walk coming around to score from a single to right field. They would play small ball to add two more runs to the score, taking the 4-1 win. Northern's sole run came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Heather Olson led the team off with an outfield single, advanced to second with an infield error, and later scored as a ground ball to the shortstop was thrown away.
The Peacocks out-hit the Wolves 12 to four. The Wolves made good contact with the ball, however, and did not see a single strikeout in the game. UIU's Davis went 3-for-3 and had three RBI. Audrey Decker pitched the entire game, recording two strikeouts while giving up the four earned runs.
