Northern State Softball Signs Six for 2006-07 Academic Year

Aberdeen, S.D. - Northern State Head Softball Coach Terri Holmes has announced the signing of six student-athletes for the 2006-07 academic year. Tara Bruns, Heather Correll, Samantha Francis, Nicole Janssen, Pamela Powers and Jill Sjoerdsma are the newest members of Northern State Softball.

“We are very proud and excited about our new student-athletes, who are all both solid academically and athletically. They will all compete for a starting position as well as bring some much needed depth to our squad. They will help us take the next step to compete for a conference championship,” said Holmes.

Tara BrunsTara Bruns will join the Wolves as a catcher after playing her prep career at Roosevelt High School. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native helped her team to a second place finish in the state tournament last season, where she was named to the all-state team. She has been awarded by the National Honor Society twice and is a three-time honor roll student at Roosevelt. Bruns will major in physical therapy at Northern State. She is the daughter of Dave and Becky Bruns.

Heather CorrellHeather Correll joins the Wolves after lettering three years at South High School. The Denver, Colo. native was a two year captain and will play second base at NSU. In 2005, Correll also played for the Colorado Ballhawks, an 18 & under fast pitch softball team. Correll plans to major in psychology and criminal justice at NSU. She is the daughter of Kari Swanson and Mark Correll.

Samantha FrancisSamantha Francis, a native of Otsego, Minn, will pitch for the Wolves after playing at Rogers High School during her prep career. Francis is planning on majoring in early childhood education at NSU. She is the daughter of Connie and Craig Francis.

 

Nicole JanssenNicole Janssen will transfer to Northern State from Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad, Colo. While at TSJC, Janssen was a two-time all-region player. As a freshman she was a first teamer as a utility player and was a second team first baseman last season. Janssen, a Firestone, Colo. native, graduated from Frederick High School and plans to major in secondary education at NSU. She is the daughter of Edward and Lucille Janssen.

Jill SjoerdsmaJill Sjoerdsma, a native of St. John, Ind., comes to Northern State from Hanover Central High School where she helped her team to win the state championship in 2004. The catcher/outfielder plans on majoring in marketing at NSU. She is the daughter of Dale and Cindy Sjoerdsma.
