Terri Holmes enters her third season as head coach of the Northern State softball team in 2007. Coach Holmes has posted a 31-63 record in her tenure at NSU, raising the level of Wolves play in just two years. The 2005 squad went 14-28 in Holmes' first season, a noticeable improvement from a 2004 record of 6-33. The Wolves continued to improve last season, going 17-34 overall. The 17 wins marks a school record for most wins in a season, although the 1982 squad continues to hold the record for best winning percentage (59.1%, 13-9).

Holmes had been the head softball and volleyball coach at Si Tanka University (Huron, SD) since 1998. She was also the women’s athletic director at Si Tanka since May of 2003. During the 2004 season Holmes collected her 400th collegiate victory.

Prior to Si Tanka Holmes was the head softball coach at Valencia Community College (Orlando, FL) from 1990 through 1998 where she was named the 1998 Mid-Florida Conference Coach of the Year and the 1990 Orange Belt Conference Coach of the Year. Her 1993 team finished in third place in the NJCAA Nationals and was named the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year.

From 1986-90 Holmes was the head softball, volleyball, and tennis coach at St. Cloud High School in St. Cloud, FL where she also taught health and physical education.

Holmes earned a B.S. degree in physical education/health/coaching from Black Hills State College. She earned her Masters of Education at National-Louis University in Tampa, FL with a focus on education and counseling.

Brian Johnson

Assistant Coach

1st Year

Originally from Alaska, Bryan Johnson is a graduate of Service High School in Anchorage where he played varsity hockey, and baseball; and he attended and is a 2003 graduate of Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD with a BS in Sociology. While at BHSU, Bryan Helped found and build the ACHA club hockey team, and served as the coach of the team from 2002-2004. After graduating from BH, Bryan enrolled at the United States Sports Academy in Alabama and has completed the program for an MS in Sports Administration and Sports Studies, and is on track to graduate in the summer of 2007. Before coming to NSU, he was an Assistant Softball Coach and an Assistant to the Athletic Director in Sports Information and Administration at Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington.

Besides helping coach softball, Coach Johnson also recruits for Coach Holmes and the softball program, and has helped with some fundraising activities. Away from softball, Bryan has also played Junior hockey for two years, and is a certified hockey official, working games locally and statewide for the SDAHA. He has three children, one of which, Kaylee, is a sophomore at Aberdeen Central High School; the other two, Sierra and Josh, live with their mom in South Carolina.

 

Erin Murphy

Graduate Assistant

1st Year

Erin Murphy joins NSU softball as a graduate assistant and will help out with the catchers.  Erin is a graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, WI, earning her bachelors degree in Business Adminstration.  While attending Wisconsin Lutheran College, she played volleyball for 3 years and was a catcher for softball team for 3 years.  ACL surgery keep her out of her junior year, but she was able to put her knowledge and experience to use in a coaching role.  She was able to bounce back her senior year and receive an All-Lake Michigan Conference honor, player of the week, and team co-captain.
 
Erin originally grew up in Appleton, WI and is working to toward her Master's in Health and Physical Education.  Her husband, Ben, is the graduate assistant for football at Northern.

 

 

Derik Budig

Strength and Conditioning Coach Derik Budig

Northern State strength & conditioning coach Derik Budig has propelled Wolves' athletics to new heights thanks to his comprehensive strength program that has been implemented into the NSU athletic system.

Budig, a Yankton, SD native, joined the Northern staff in 2002. He earned his Master's of Science Degree in Kinesiology from the University of Texas, at El Paso (UTEP) in 2005 after working as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach. He has also served as a strength and conditioning consultant for Olympic track and field athletes in El Paso. Prior to his time at UTEP, Budig was an intern for the National Football League's Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the area of strength and conditioning.

Budig has also had success on the football field where he was a four-year starter and two-year team captain for Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Budig is in charge of developing and coordinating programs which assist student/athletes in developing overall physical strength and conditioning at NSU. He is the founder and director of The Wolves Challenge, a speed, strength, and conditioning camp. In addition, Budig also organizes the weight room for all of Northern's athletic programs and is the sponsor for NSU's Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Budig lives in Aberdeen with his wife Amanda and his daughter Ella, born in April 2005. They are expecting another baby in March.
