Wolves edge the Cougars

Aberdeen, S.D.- The Northern State Wolves (1-0) won their season opener against the Colorado Christian Cougars (0-1) 2-1 on Jerde Field.

The Wolves and the Cougars played to a tie in the first half, but in the second half the Wolves started to click as they scored two goals. The Wolves opened up the scoring on a left footed blast from Melissa Gamble (Sr., F., Calgary, Alberta) at the 56:54 mark in the game. Gamble received a nice pass from Jessi Hambrick (Jr., MF. Thornton, Colo.) to help her score her goal. Just six minutes after their first goal the Wolves got their second goal off of a header by Kelsey Vinnedge (Jr., MF., Great Falls, MT). Hambrick and Alisha Martinez (Fr., MF. Westmister, Colo.) assisted on the second goal for the Wolves.

The Cougars scored their lone goal at the 71:27 mark of the game off a Samantha Dean blast. The Wolves out shot the Cougars 20 to 6 and 11 shots on goal to 2.

Theresa Alexander picked up the win for the Wolves and gets her first win of the year. The Wolves will be in Grand Forks, ND to take on the Sioux on August 27 th at 1:00 pm.
