NSU Soccer Player Melissa Gamble Wins Prestigious Award

ABERDEEN, SD - The South Dakota Sports Writers Association honored NSU soccer player Melissa Gamble with the college women’s Athlete of the Year award in late December. This award started back in 1979 and has been dominated by track and basketball athletes, winning a combined 21 of the awards. Gamble is the first soccer player to win this prestigious honor.

The Calgary native just finished her Northern State career this fall and holds the record for goals in a career with 49 and points in a career (113). During her four year career at Northern State, Gamble has led her team to 49 wins and has been a member of the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference First Team every year she has been at Northern. She was also named to the All-Region first team this past fall.

Gamble is also a great student, maintaining a 3.8 gpa in Health and Physical Education and will graduate in May. She will continue her education and involvement in NSU soccer as a graduate assistant next fall.

NSU has had three past winners: Cathy Coyle (1982), Amy Von Wald (1993), and Julie Jensen (1995).
