Mary Shuts Out Northern For Slim Win

September 16, 2007
BISMARCK, N.D. - A lone goal in the second period gave the Marauders of the University of Mary (4-3-0) a 1-0 shutout win over Northern State Sunday afternoon in Bismarck, N.D. The tight U-Mary defense allowed Northern just one shot on goal in the matchup, just the second time this season that the Wolves had one or fewer looks at the net.

The Wolves held the Marauders to just two shots in the first half of play and did not allow a shot on goal in the period. Northern took their shot at the goal in the first period, but a save by UM's Brannigan Coyle left the halftime score at 0-0.

U-Mary picked up the pace in the second half and fired eight shots, including five at the NSU target. The lone goal of the game went to Shanda Lester at the 69:18 mark with assists going to Dana Asplund and Joanna Drennen. Northern took four additional shots, but was unable to pull the trigger at the net in the second half.

NSU's six shots came from six different players, with the shot on goal going to Maggie Madrid. Kit Grace made four saves. Lester had three of U-Mary's five shots on goal, including the game winner.

The Wolves continue their road trip next Saturday and Sunday with games at Minnesota, Crookston and Bemidji State. Both games are slated for a 1:00 pm start.
