NSU Men Take Second, Women Place Sixth at
NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

MOORHEAD , Minn. – The Northern State men’s outdoor track & field team placed nine athletes in the top two of their events on Saturday to drive the team to a second place finish in the NSIC Championships with 134 points. Wayne State took the 2007 NSIC title with 166 points. The Northern women’s team finished sixth in the conference as the University of Mary took the top spot for the season.

Jake Hamik (Aberdeen) and Ryan Conrad (Milbank) entered the conference championships ranked first and second in the 400 Meter Dash, respectively, and came through with the top two spots in the event, with Hamik taking the win in 48.50 seconds. Hamik was the top finisher in another Northern top two sweep, this time in the 400 Meter Hurdles and accompanied by Bill Cameron (Aberdeen). Hamik led the field with a time of 52.78, followed by Cameron with a season best time of 55.00. Hamik won a third event, the 110 Meter Hurdles, with a time of 14.58 seconds. He provisionally qualifies for the NCAA National meet in both of the hurdling events.

In addition to his first place finish in the 10,000 Meter Run on Friday, Jeremy VanVeen topped the field in the 5,000 Meter Run on Saturday with a time of 15:23.40, crossing the finish line nearly 20 seconds faster than his next opponent. He is an NCAA provisional qualifier in both events. Placing second in events were Lance York (Lake Geneva, Wisc.) in the Shot Put (14.52m) and Matt Walberg (Aberdeen) in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase (9:43.44). The NSU men’s 4x400 Meter Relay team also finished in second place with a time of 3:18.23.

The Northern State women’s team finished in sixth place at the NSIC Conference Championships in 2007. They had four athletes finish in the top five of their field throughout the two day meet. Freshman Amanda Madden (Herreid) won the Discus Throw with a mark 43.79 meters, nearly two meters more than the next best finisher. Paige Paulson (Clark) took fourth in the 400 Meter Dash (58.53s), Jenny Baus finished in fifth place in the 1,500 Meter Run (5:01.54). Miranda Boepple (Dickinson, ND) took second place in the Javelin Throw on Friday with a toss of 38.64 meters.

The All-NSIC performers consist of the top two place winners in each event and the members of the top relay team from the conference meet. Honorable mention awards shall be provided to the third place performers and the second place relay teams.
