WOMEN FINISH SECOND, MEN THIRD AT NSIC TRACK AND FIELD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Feb. 23, 2002

NSU senior Tam Hekrdle on her way to a third-place finish in the 400 Saturday.

Minnesota-Duluth captured the men's and women's team titles at the 2002 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Northern Feb. 21-23.

Northern finished second in the women's competition and third on the men's side. Athlete and Coach of the Year honors were also awarded. On the women's side, Redfield sophomore LeAnne Ehrich earned Athlete of the Year honors by cleaning up on the throwing events. Ehrich won both the shot put (43-0.25 feet) and weight throw (51-9.25 feet) events.

On the men's side, Bemidji State senior Aaron Feia won Athlete of the Year honors. Feia won the 600, placed second in the 1,000 and was part of BSU's conference champion mile relay team.

Minnesota-Duluth coaches Bill Hudspith (men) and John Fulkrod (women) cleaned up the Coach of the Year awards.

For Northern, the women's team picked up five conference championships and nine all-conference awards for placing either first or second in an event. On the men's side, Northern won four conference championships and picked up five all-NSIC honors for first or second.

Other than Ehrich, sophomore distance phenom Kristin Peterson (Arlington) racked up two more all-conference honors by winning the 5,000 meter run and taking second in the mile run. That puts Peterson's total all-conference award count -- including cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field -- at seven.

Senior April Hericks (Gettysburg) also earned two all-conference honors, defending her pentathlon championship on Day One and finishing second in the hurdles on Day Three.

Another amazing feat by Northern's women: senior Amanda Dietrich, fresh off helping her basketball team to a victory the night before at Minnesota-Morris, turned around and won the 800-meter race Saturday.

On the men's side, first-year phenom Micah Arnold (Northridge, Calif.) won the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Senior Eric Longenry (Ortonville, Minn.) -- who wasn't able to defend his pentathlon title due to injury on Day One -- came back strong on the final day to win the 55-meter hurdles. Also winning an NSIC championship for the men: Ryan Wilhelm (Faulkton) in the pole vault.
