June 19 , 2003

ABERDEEN, SD: Northern State cross country and track & field standout Kristin Peterson (Jr., Arlington, S.D.) was named to the Verizon® Academic All-America Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Second Team. The announcement came on Thursday.

Peterson, one of fifteen cross country/track & field athletes from across the nation to receive second team honors, had compiled a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average during her three years at NSU with a major in biology.

Peterson is a two-time all-NSIC selection in cross country finishing second in the conference meet in both 2001 and 2002. She has also earned team MVP honors for cross country all three years at Northern State.

In track & field, Peterson has been an two-time NSIC champion in the indoor 5000 meter run and the outdoor steeplechase. She has also earned all-NSIC honors in the mile and 1500 meter run and has been a two-time NCAA II provisional qualifyer in the steeplechase. In all, Kristin is a 12-time all-NSIC selection.

“Kristin has shown a great ability to balance her major in biology, her extra curricular activities and running and excel in all three,” commented NSU Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach Jim Fuller. “I don’t recall coaching an athlete in the last 15 years that has had been able to have such a well-rounded college career.”

Peterson is a six-time member of the NSIC All-Academic team, a USTCA All-Academic selection and a CCCA All-Academic pick. She is an NSU scholar athlete, on the NSU Dean’s List, an NSU student-athlete mentor, member of Student Ambassadors and member of the FCA.

Peterson is NSU’s second Verizon® Academic All-American in the 2002-03 academic year joining NSU soccer player Natalie Blodgett who also received second team consideration.

The Verizon® Academic All-America team is voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
