Northern
Has Strong Showing in NSU Pentathlon
ABERDEEN,
SD - Northern State University athletes took the top spots in the
NSU pentathlon held on Friday in the Barnett Center.
Sophomore
Katie Anderson set a new school record in the women's division with
a 3,158 point total in the five event competition. The Groton, SD
native broke April Hericks two year old record of 3,073 points.
Hericks
now an assistant coach at NSU and Andersons event coach was also
in the competition and placed 2nd. Anderson's point total presently
leads the NSIC, she also is the NSIC leader in the 55 m hurdles
and is ranked in the top 10 in three other events.
On
the men's side Northern athletes took 3 of the top 4 spots in the
event. Sophomore Jesse Heinz (Ipswich, SD) placed first with 3,321
points, Eric Schwan (Aberdeen, SD) also a sophomore placed second
with 3,000 points and Ryan Rogenes a Junior (Glasgow, Mont) rounded
out the NSU men in fourth place with 2,901 points.
Heniz,
like Anderson also leads the NSIC in the pentathlon and has shown
great improvement over the past year. The highlight of the men's
competition was Heinz's high jump of 6' 8", a jump that was only
1/4 of an inch off of the NCAA II provisional qualifying mark.
The
wolves again look to be very strong in the Multi Events (pentathlons,
heptathlons, and decathlons) this year and are sure to continue
the tradition started by Eric Longhenry, Lynne Nacke and April Hericks
over the past six years.
The
Indoor Track team will be back in action on Friday February 6 at
2:00 pm.
