It was an historic season for Northern State's volleyball program. Not only did this year's team finish with the second best record in NSU history, it also was a major factor in the conference race and made a splash on the national scene.
The Wolves finished 21-10 overall and third in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference at 7-5. The overall mark ranks second only to the 21-7 finish the team enjoyed in 1982. This season's record is even more impressive considering that no one had a tougher schedule to begin the season than did NSU. Six of the Wolves' first 10 opponents were ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation according to the AVCA's Division II Pre-Season Poll.
Led by the experience and determination of four-year regulars and senior captains Tammy Mademann (South St. Paul, Minn.), Jessica Johnson (Chaska, Minn.) and Val Satre (Madelia, Minn.), NSU kicked off the season by knocking off 20th-ranked Southern Colorado in four games. Also on NSU's national hit list in the early going was 6th-ranked Northern Michigan – which the Wolves unceremoniously dumped 3-0 – and 12th-ranked South Dakota State in the match of the year.
The Wolves defeated the Jacks 3-2 in a marathon match (15-12, 15-9, 4-15, 4-15, 25-23) at the NSIC-NCC Cross-Over Tournament in Mankato, Minn. The score from the fifth and deciding game is not a misprint. The Wolves and Jackrabbits frantically battled back and forth in the deciding rally-scoring game, but NSU came out on top 25-23. The blow-for-blow final stanza was symbolic of the entire match. The Wolves came out of the blocks fast to win the first two games. But SDSU came back with a vengeance, allowing only four points per game in the next two games to set up the finale.
All three seniors said this year's team brought a different attitude to each match. The more confident approach resulted in an 11-match winning streak – the longest in the program's history – through the heart of the season. The feat broke the eight-game streak enjoyed by the 1982 Wolves.
During the season, Mademann became NSU's all-time service aces leader, breaking Lisa Hohn's mark of 173 career aces from 1989-92. Mademann ended her career with an even 200 aces. Johnson ended her career proving to be one of the best ball control players ever play for NSU. Aside from having the best career serve receive percentage at NSU, Johnson also ended the season ranked 10th in the nation in digs with 4.69 per game and third on NSU's career digs list with 1,970 career digs. As a team, Northern was ranked fourth in the nation in digs with 22.73 per game. Satre ended her career ranked second in assists, tallying 2,611 despite splitting time between setter, defensive specialist and outside hitter through her four-year career with NSU.
The Wolves' rise to prominence this season didn't go unnoticed by the
conference. Head coach Lisa Schriver was named NSIC Coach of the Year,
while freshman outside hitter Roxy Wolf (Apple Valley, Minn.) was named
Newcomer of the Year. Junior middle hitter Jean Kringstad (Aberdeen, S.D.)
and Johnson were first-team all-conference selections, while sophomore
setter Tricia Schilling (Valley City, N.D.) and Wolf made the second team.
Losing three senior who have each been a big part of the program for the
past four years will not be easy, but with a strong cast of up-and-coming
players, the Wolves hope to build on what they accomplished in 1998.
