The crowd of 186 fans must have enjoyed what they saw Wednesday in Wachs Arena as they stood on their feet and cheered a great match even as the Wolves fell 3-2 to Southwest State (15-3, 15-9, 11-15, 13-15, 18-16).
After coming out slow in the first two games, Northern rebounded with hardfourght victories in the next two. In the fourth game, the Wolves came back from a 13-6 deficit to win the game and swing the momentum pendulum of the match back their way going into the rally-scoring fifth game.
But the Mustangs came back to take the early lead in the fifth game. Again, the Wolves came back and staved off three match points before SSU won out.
Senior outside hitter Alana Kiehn (Carlton, Minn.) scored a double-double
with 15 kills and 30 digs, as did freshman outside hitter Stephanie Tschetter
(Huron) with 13 kills and 21 digs. Senior middle blocker Jean Kringstad
(Aberdeen) led the team with 21 kills. Junior setter Tricia Schilling (Valley
City, N.D.) dished out 47 assists with 21 digs.
