Wolves go 1-2 at South Dakota State

Northern State fell to No. 7 South Dakota State (30-14, 30-16, 30-26) and North Dakota (30-15, 30-24, 30-25) before picking up its first win on the season against Minnesota-Morris (30-17, 30-24, 30-26) at the South Dakota State Burger King Classic in Brookings, S.D. Friday and Saturday.

The Wolves (1-2) fell to the nationally-ranked host Jackrabbits on Friday. Senior outside hitter Beth VanEmmerik (Gillette, Wyo.) led the Wolves with six kills, while junior outside hitter Molly Veenhof (Huron) tallied 10 digs. Sophomore setter Tara Sauter (Belle Plaine, Minn.) added 22 assists.

On Saturday, Veenhof led the way again but NSU was upended in an early afternoon match against the Sioux, who racked up 13 service aces en route to victory. Veenhof ended with nine kills and 13 digs.

In the last match of the Classic, the Wolves put it together to sweep the Cougars in a non-conference match. Junior middle blocker Christi Lucas (White) pounded out 13 kills at a .360 hitting clip while senior middle Shanna Dahl (St. Cloud, Minn.) added 10 kills at a .350 hitting percentage to lead NSU. Sophomore setters Tara Sauter (Belle Plaine, Minn.) and Heidi Wiles combined for 17 and 16 assists, respectively.
